I watch 70s/80s films, 80s tv shows (think knight rider, bullseye, the hulk etc). Could watching these types of tv shows be making me feel down ? none of them are particularly upbeat ! all quite drole. I'm thinking I should be watching more modern things ?

I am 51

I think it can make you feel nostalgic and a bit maudlin. I watched some of the Xmas EastEnders epsiodes from my childhood and though I enjoyed the trip down memory lane, it did also make me feel a bit sad...and not because EastEnders is so depressing anyway. Makes you realise how much the world has changed.

I had enjoyed watching some nineties shows too but it was making me long for simpler times.

‘Droll’ (if that’s what you intended to write) means funny, though.

Agree with pp that 80/90s looks so archaic now but the simple quests for romance seem very sweet in comparison to the internet dating/scamming/tiktok inferno of today's culture. Everything seemed slightly more meaningful.

Ooh I don't know. I tend to watch a mixture of things. What have you watched recently which was more recent?

LaLatina · 06/01/2025 08:38

Sorry, hit post too soon. I wouldn’t have seen any of those series as anything likely to make you feel low in themselves, unless they have specific associations for you…?

I experienced the exact same thing earlier this year. A dear friend of nearly 40 years passed away and I found myself watching shows from the 90's as a way to process the grief. It was like a short trip back to simpler times when we were both younger.

It's harmless, I think. Nostalgia tinged with a bit of sadness.

I found a YouTube channel that makes animated stories, 'Because It's Interesting'. Their stories are a breath of fresh air and I couldn't help myself from binging them. I think you would like them too.
