Evensong at Westminster Abbey

How long does the service last? Starts 5pm. Hoping to visit before a 7.30pm theatre performance Shaftesbury Avenue and possibly eat between? Too ambitious perhaps?!

Evensong lasts just under one hour. It's the same liturgy (set of words) in every cathedral and there is no sermon so there's no variable on how long that takes. The only thing that differs service to service is the choice of music (canticles and anthem) but that only makes a difference of minutes. I think you've got enough time but you'd have to be quick with the eating!

Agree. It's 45-60 mins for Evensong. So, you could definitely do Evensong and the theatre. Dinner might need to be a sandwich or something very fast though - depending on how long before the theatre show you like to get there.

Thank you very much for the replies. Country mouse trying to pack too much in! I think we will save the abbey for another visit when we can appreciate it properly with a tour earlier in the day and then the service.
