https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/jan/12/uk-government-to-crack-down-on-mps-earning-extra-cash-from-media-firms

MPs would no longer be able to rake in huge sums that can see them more than double their parliamentary salaries by signing contracts with media outlets, under plans being considered by ministers.

The Observer has been told that talks on further tightening rules on MPs’ outside interests, including media contracts, will be started by leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell, at a hearing of the all-party standards committee on Tuesday.

Good.

The only things keeping me on Mumsnet right now are these threads and the one I support in Alcohol Problems, because it is a hugely valuable resource for (mostly) women with family members dealing with alcoholism. There's so much wisdom on there for those who need it that I really don't want to let it go.

I'd miss you if you left.

Ben Houchen dismisses concern over Mark Zuckerberg removing fact checkers from Facebook saying,

Is that the same person that put an ad on Facebook asking for someone to sing a Cliff Richard medly over zoom whilst they masturbated ?

So would I. Hugely.

PandoraSox · 12/01/2025 14:40

You OK @pointythings? I noticed you on one of the goady racist fucker type threads. Can't remember which one and I have hidden most of them now.

I'm OK. I dipped into the benefits thread with some facts but I won't post on it again. Mumsnet is an absolute shitshow and I think the moderation is absolutely pathetic, but I'm staying for the good bits - I'd miss all of you too.

DuncinToffee · 12/01/2025 15:01

I did the same on that thread Pointy, no use engaging.

Another new/nc'er started that.

I saw that thread too. Had to hide it. I am also mainly staying for this thread at the moment. Hopefully the goady ones will get bored soon.

countrygirl99 · 12/01/2025 15:08

I have decided to stick to here, the books and elderly parents board now. I occasionally get seduced by another thread but have realised it's not good for my blood pressure.

Efacsen · 12/01/2025 15:09

Someone on one of the many many goady threads - don't remember which one just read the first couple of pages then hide them and anyway they all sort of merge into one - was triumphantly giving out that the threads aren't being taken down [no matter how awful they are]

So we're not the only ones who've noticed that 'normal' moderation isn't happening

Mine’s low so they actually benefit me!

I am hoping that the mistake Musk and his cohort of cunts have made is to pick a fight with a generation that grew up telling people in power to fuck off - my inner punk burns bright.

"Fact checkers haven't been great, mainstream media organisations actively did cover up things like President Biden's mental decline"

Being in that no man's land between Tyne & Wear and tees Valley, I'm glad that our council finally saw sense and joined the NECA with Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, despite the shenanigans within at least 3 of the councils involved.

Yes, and even after it burnt down he has appeared on the US news gleefully spouting conspiracy theories about how the fire started. He is quite mad.

I don't think he's at all bothered about his house. I guess he has enough money and other houses. It seems he has been trying to sell it for years so if he gets insurance back on it he will be free of it.

I'm quite certain that is true, though there appears to be some sort of convenient cover up 👀

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14272775/amp/Labour-planning-axe-billions-disability-benefits-bill-order-ease-debts-crisis.html

The benefits thread reminded me of this from the other day. I think the Mail have forgotten that this is supposed to be a good thing for their readers.
It must be difficult for them to decide between supporting Labour and going against Labour but be against cuts to disability benefits.

Labour planning to axe billions from disability benefits bill

Downing Street is said to believe that significant reductions are needed in the welfare budget, namely from personal independence payments (PIP).

If I wanted an honest appraisal of possible Labour government developments, I don't think I would reach for the Daily Mail first.

E2A: it should be obvious to anyone with half a brain cell (so not worth posting on a GoadyThread) that demonising the benefits bill is simply the mass of employers trying to depress wages creating a glut of "workers". Even my dog could see that. And they don't exist.

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/01/2025 16:37

Well quite. But it popped up on Twitter and the idea of the DM being outraged by benefit cuts made me laugh. It’s quite an about turn.

I’m not sure anyone who gets their news from it is necessarily switched on enough to think ‘hang on, aren’t we supposed to be for benefit cuts.’

SerendipityJane · 12/01/2025 16:38

Admittedly niche (I have eclectic tastes) and certainly not easily summarised .... however if you have ever wondered about the phrase "The universe is trying to tell us something" then accepting the possibility that the universe can think suddenly puts a whole new slant on the idea.

(Is it just me or does anyone else have a brief "Sandi Toskvig has boned up" vibes ?)

I look forward to Kemi adding it to her "things to talk about".

I am quite frustrated with Rachel and her stupid fiscal rules though.

I appreciate that might contradict the opinion of the thread as a Labour love in though.

I’m not particularly impressed either. I sense a reshuffle coming on. This place will be unbearable with gloating then.

littledrummergirls · 12/01/2025 16:52

Mumsnet moderation currently is a joke.
I reported a thread which is still up but as I have been instructed by mnhq previously to challenge robustly on the thread, I also did this, and had the comment removed.

I'm thinking I may be heading for the naughty step at some point.

It would be disappointing if the Trump win has upset the spending plans that should have accounted for it when they were drawn up. It's not like the US had a snap election, and it's not like Donald Trumps victory was out of the question.

If the UK hadn't crippled itself with Brexit we wouldn't be having this discussion.
