From the other angle, I am perplexed as to what is awful about Goodall? Have I missed something? Everyone knows many journalists have political leanings. We can like their work, their viewpoint, we can agree with them. Much as some might agree with Matthew Parris. He's hardly Owen Jones, or Rod Liddle.

Piggywaspushed · 07/01/2025 06:58

PS -it is indeed an excellent article.

Saucery · 07/01/2025 07:07

I don’t care if he’s the most left wing of all left wing journalists whoever left winged in print. He is right about this. The shift is shameful.

Starmer's best moment as PM
And the Powellisation of conservative thought

Managed to catch up and read this this morning.

That's a really good article. I feel very balanced and explains his viewpoint well backed up with facts.

It's such a shame we are in a time where people don't listen or read long articles - they'd rather believe an X post and take it at face value.

littledrummergirls · 07/01/2025 08:30

Something strange is happening on these boards at the moment. For long time there have been posters who I don't perceive to be genuine, posting to stir up trouble for Labour and have been in support of Putin.

Since the influx of Musk supporters, genuine or otherwise, a number of those original posters appear to be going into battle with the Musk ones. It's an interesting development watching familiar names seemingly change tack.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has said those who cover up or fail to report child sexual abuse could face professional or criminal sanctions under a new offence to be introduced this year.

The proposal was one of 20 recommendations made by Professor Alexis Jay following her seven year inquiry into child sexual abuse, which concluded in 2022.

Cooper said the change would be added to the Crime and Policing Bill this spring.

I thought Goodall's article was interesting and provided context.
If there are criticisms of the article I am happy to read them.

Why do you love Lewis Goodall so much. I don’t understand

Lewis Goodhall seems to be a nice young man who has a great relationship with his mother/family - hope @DuncinToffee 's DH doesn't get to hear you casting aspersions

BIossomtoes · 07/01/2025 09:00

Thank you for the excellent article Duncin. How long do we think before Jenrick moves to Reform?

I agree. The Conservative Party is off the scale.

Though it’s been coming a while; Powell got sacked for his comments, but Braverman notably didn’t after her baiting of the police as HOME SECRETARY regarding the attendance of Tommy Robinson and his supporters around the Cenotaph. Sunak should have sacked her.

Jenrick doing well out of all this isn’t he? Badenoch can never be as extreme, and I don’t think people will vote for her party while she leads it. All they are doing is conceding more and more of the centre ground.

Know what you mean - tho' the level of cray-cray on the Musk threads is a bit overwhelming and think some of the usual anti Labour/Starmer regulars were getting confused as to which side they are supposed to be supporting!!

Really hope he doesn't as it will give them 6 MPs and all the privileges that go with that

They are all just thirsty race baiters who like to predict race war, imminent collapse of the UK and with an interesting inability to understand any of its history.

I thought Starmer did very well; but it’s the same MO on Mumsnet as the riots, right down to the actual posts.

Quite honestly however I do think that the salient issue about gangs who abuse children and the recent convictions does show a very disturbing issue re the ethnicity of who is involved. When you look at the conviction profile then it’s very stark. The handling of offenders like this does need to change; and the consequences far tougher and internationally a lot more pressure placed on Pakistan to accept deportations. If that means no visas for a while so be it.

Rummly · 07/01/2025 09:20

I abhor Musk. He should shut up. And Badenoch should condemn attacks of that sort. But this Labour outrage is tripe. As is Mr Goodall’s article.

This is, yet again, pure hypocrisy. In 2023 Labour ran attack ads, apparently approved by Starmer, that said that Sunak didn’t believe in jailing paedophiles. At the time, Phillips said the ads didn’t go far enough.

Starmer apparently authorised the ads and persisted with them despite internal party criticism.

This has been reported in the Mail. But here’s a Guardian link from the time:

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2023/apr/07/labour-defends-ad-claiming-sunak-doesnt-think-child-sex-abusers-should-be-jailed

BTW, I haven’t seen anything on this thread about Tulip Siddiq. I may have missed it, but I don’t think so. The story’s been reported in the FT and the Sunday Times. If that had been a Tory minister - in charge of financial anti-corruption, no less - Labour supporters would have been all over it, making accusations of stinky goings-on and corruption. Why so silent now?

Shadow ministers privately say they feel ‘uncomfortable’ over ‘distasteful’ ad amid calls for Keir Starmer to apologise

I’m glad to hear that. But it’s not relevant to Starmer’s and the Labour Party’s hypocrisy and contrived outrage.

Again, that’s jolly good. But it’s got nothing to do with the complete absence on this thread of any acknowledgment of the story or its possible implications.

countrygirl99 · 07/01/2025 09:30

Presumably the pie charts that are in the data article earlier in the thread. The one that shows 7% of CSA suspects are Asian and 83% are white.
For reference the respective %s of the UK population are 8.9% and 82%.

I could, sure. But since this thread, like all its predecessors and no doubt successors, is in chat, and is devoted to politics and current affairs (and cats), I thought I’d comment here.
