We don’t have a playroom

Someone please reassure me this is normal? Stupidly getting mum guilt over it as I watch tik toks of people rearranging their playrooms after Christmas !

Our house is a bit of a squeeze. Open plan downstairs but thank goodness for Ikea kallax that helps store so much! But we pay 2 sets of nursery fees so moving isn’t imminent

We’d love a bigger house and I dream of an extra room downstairs for my kids to have all their toys laid out! Ours isn’t majorly organised I try to rotate them etc

but yes - please tell me lots of you don’t have playrooms???

Er, no playroom here.

cestlavielife · 03/01/2025 22:14

Of course they don't.
Many people in cities live tiny flats

iggleoggle · 03/01/2025 22:14

Of course it’s fine. The vast majority of people don’t have a playroom. Kallaxes are great. I sometimes pulled a sofa out from a wall which ate up precious floor space but allowed a railway track to be set up for a few days or whatever, but it’s fine.

dont believe Instagram!

CouchSpud · 03/01/2025 22:15

My kids are 15 and 11. They’ve lived their childhoods very happily without a play room

Biroclicker · 03/01/2025 22:15

We don't, we could possibly but I've always preferred to have the DC in with us in the same room if we are lounging about. I don't really like the idea of shushing them off to another room and having the living room child free. So our living room is a tip although we noticed by 6 years old most toys had migrated upstairs to their bedrooms.

Temporaryname158 · 03/01/2025 22:15

No playroom here. Why would I want them in a room I wasn’t in? And I don’t want to be sat in a playroom for hours. Toys are stored in their bedrooms and the living room like most people I know

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 03/01/2025 22:16

Didn't grow up with one and don't have one now for my 2 kids

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 03/01/2025 22:16

Nope, we used to take over the dining table for a few days each holiday with Lego etc then all back in ikea storage. Even now we have an ottoman in the living room for DGC’s toys.

wastingtimeonhere · 03/01/2025 22:17

Not only do most kids not have a playroom, ....shock, horror, ...
huge numbers share too.. mn collective clutching pearls

Needmorelego · 03/01/2025 22:17

Most people don't have a playroom.
Those that do - it's usually what originally would have been the dining room.

Lliitlllee · 03/01/2025 22:17

Thanks so far!! It’s more I felt guilty that our downstairs feels quite cluttered and full like they deserve more space ? (Stupid I know)

but it’s a good way of viewing it! I like to join in. Play when I can and the open plan downstairs means I can do dishes / a wash and see my little ones play as they’re never far :)

quite positive outlooks here which has given a different perspective

No we don't

TickingAlongNicely · 03/01/2025 22:18

Outrageous. Every child requires their own double bedroom, ensuite and living room. Plus a study and playroom. Not to mention a few acres of garden.

Meanwhile back in the real world... we had a "playroom" as DDs shared a bedroom when small. They never played in there, it was just somewhere toys lived. And a general dumping ground.

Isthisexpected · 03/01/2025 22:19

No playroom. But got rid of unnecessary furniture to make one end of the lounge a play area with kitchen, play table for sensory play/drawing/craft etc and toy cars/train set etc to be permanently out. I do feel sorry for kids whose toys have to fit into small storage boxes or under the sofa hidden away. I guess if they're in full time childcare then they aren't home much to play though.

Nc54684 · 03/01/2025 22:19

When I was growing up a few friends had playrooms and my mum pointed out they were never used as children will always bring toys to play under their parents feet be it in the kitchen or living room. Now I’m a grown up I can see her point!!

we have 1 open plan room downstairs and no possibility of a playroom ever. I don’t mourn it

StarDolphins · 03/01/2025 22:19

Absolutely no need for a playroom. They play in the lounge or later in their room. I’d stay off TikTok.

Rosesgrowonyou · 03/01/2025 22:20

I don't know anyone who has a playroom.

MauveVelcro · 03/01/2025 22:21

We've never had a playroom. And it's not for lack of space - we have three reception rooms so could have if we'd wanted to.

I just don't see the point in having a separate room, away from the main living area as a 'playroom'. Either the dc would have been away from us playing in a separate room or I'd have found myself sitting in the bloody playroom with them. No thanks 😂

Majority of toys were kept in their rooms and a key few in the living room. Switched up every so often.

Monstermashermashedthemonster · 03/01/2025 22:21

No playroom here.

Jxtina86 · 03/01/2025 22:22

No playroom here - DD's toys were stored in the living room and only in the last year have we moved all the big toys into her room (she's almost 6). I don't know anyone who has a playroom - some have two living areas I.e. open plan kitchen/living area with all the toys and another living room/snug but no dedicated playroom exactly.

Seawolves · 03/01/2025 22:23

No playroom here either.

LostMySocks · 03/01/2025 22:24

We have a playroom but only because our sons share a room. It's about to vanish as they now need their own space. It's basically the spare room but they're allowed to leave stuff out. But they also take over the living room for their Lego cars.

Swearwolf · 03/01/2025 22:26

We've never had one either. When they were tiny we had a little two-bed place with no space at all, and now we have a bigger house we both work from home and have two home offices (well, an office and a spare room with a desk in). Their rooms are a shitshow but they don't seem to care, and when they were smaller our house was also full of child detritus, but I didn't mind because it was their house too and I was happy enough to see their things everywhere. I've never been the kind of person to want a perfect living room that looks like no children live there, because they do! Now they're a bit older our downstairs is quite grown up again, it was a brief period of easels and toy kitchens and already feels a lifetime ago.

Meow!

That's quite leap.

FlowerP0w3r · 03/01/2025 22:26

DDs bedroom is effectively her playroom as she sleeps in with me every night! She's 6 and still co sleeps with me (her choice entirely)

However, no, an actual playroom is just not necessary and a luxury. As long as your kids are happy, why overcomplicate things?
