We don’t have a playroom

Someone please reassure me this is normal? Stupidly getting mum guilt over it as I watch tik toks of people rearranging their playrooms after Christmas !

Our house is a bit of a squeeze. Open plan downstairs but thank goodness for Ikea kallax that helps store so much! But we pay 2 sets of nursery fees so moving isn’t imminent

We’d love a bigger house and I dream of an extra room downstairs for my kids to have all their toys laid out! Ours isn’t majorly organised I try to rotate them etc

but yes - please tell me lots of you don’t have playrooms???

I only know 2 families who have a playroom.

One converted their dining room - the kids were massively spoiled and had waaaay too much of everything, ended up having to eat all meals off their knees on the sofa in the lounge. Not a sacrifice I'd make.

The second family are loaded. All 3 kids have en-suites, double beds straight from their cots, home office, utility room, detached garage etc. Absolutely not the norm.

My own kids have a corner of the lounge as well as rotating toys from their rooms.

Plenty of kids have absolutely nothing op. Don't believe everything you watch on social media.

my children could go into the playroom or the living room with their toys, i could go in the playroom with them if the toy was very big and it was handy when they had friends round. Except for homework when they were older they were always downstairs with us, again handy when they had friends round. It was even handier when dh wanted to watch the football 😀

the new house has a small room which we use for game storage and as another tv room, it wouldn’t have worked as a playroom in this house so once again we would be using the dining room as i can see it, and into it, very easily

No playroom and no toxic TikTok

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 04/01/2025 11:00

I do agree with many others, i was the only person in my friendship group who had a playroom, the house layout just worked for us where it just wouldn't have done with others

we all have loving, well adjusted children who come home to us on a regular basis and seem to like us, it doesn’t matter in the longrun

Baddaybigcloud · 04/01/2025 11:01

My kids just drag all the toys they want to play with into the living room and the play room becomes a dumping ground so 🤷‍♀️

Of course it's normal not to have a playroom! I can do one better - I don't even have a garden. I've brought DS up his whole life in a 2 bedroom third floor flat.

We didn't have a playroom. Out house is far from huge. Our living room was big enough to split into two smaller rooms with a studd wall. Could that be an option? Or a wall of Kallax?

Amaranthasweetandfair · 04/01/2025 12:21

Seriously get off tik tok. It is (clearly) not reflective of real life and you don't seem to be aware of that, so it's making you feel bad for no reason.

If you have a spare room then the best use for it imo is as an adult space so there is always one area of the house that is calm, tidy, peaceful and doesn’t have random Lego pieces lying in wait to gouge you in that sensitive skin area between your toes.

Kdubs1981 · 04/01/2025 14:56

Of course not. We do, but kids don't play in it! They want to be with us, so essentially storage

Echobelly · 04/01/2025 15:03

I grew up in a 6 bed house and we never had a 'playroom', never had one for the kids either, we were in a 2-bed flat until they were 3 and 6 and honestly the lack of playroom has had zero impact on them I promise you!
