We don’t have a playroom

Someone please reassure me this is normal? Stupidly getting mum guilt over it as I watch tik toks of people rearranging their playrooms after Christmas !

Our house is a bit of a squeeze. Open plan downstairs but thank goodness for Ikea kallax that helps store so much! But we pay 2 sets of nursery fees so moving isn’t imminent

We’d love a bigger house and I dream of an extra room downstairs for my kids to have all their toys laid out! Ours isn’t majorly organised I try to rotate them etc

but yes - please tell me lots of you don’t have playrooms???

We have a playroom but only because my 2 girls share a room (their choice). It's very useful to store toys, especially big things. But if it's any consolation it doesn't actually get played in much and the toys still seem to migrate to every single room of the house anyway.

I watch tik toks of people rearranging their playrooms after Christmas Stop doing this!

Endofyear · 03/01/2025 22:26

We never had a playroom. We had a pretty small lounge and our kids played in there - when the weather was decent we had the back doors open and they played outside too. For the first 10 years of our marriage we lived in a pretty small 3 bed house and we had 4 kids. There wasn't a lot of space but our kids were happy and well cared for and loved. Kids don't need a playroom! When they're little, they want to be where you are anyway.

GreyBlackBay · 03/01/2025 22:26

We've done a ground floor extension on each house we've lived in to add a playroom and a study, they're very useful but I don't know anyone else with a playroom.

Some of my friends dismantled the dining table and resurrected it only on special occasions and used the space for play. This shocked some other friends - what, you don't eat every meal at the table? - but if you're lacking space it's a great idea.

We have a play room but our kids share a bedroom and they're not allowed any toys in there as they just play instead of sleeping, they're allowed books only in their room. They're both ND and easily overstimulated though, it works for us.

Mine have a playroom. But never actually play in there so it's a bit pointless really. They prefer to play wherever I am.

Stickortwigs · 03/01/2025 22:30

We have a playroom. No bugger ever plays in it! They want to be where you are anyway. It’s a glorified storage room ime.

MichaelAndEagle · 03/01/2025 22:30

Don't have one. Don't know anyone with one.

BlueSilverCats · 03/01/2025 22:31

I mean.. we're in a one bedroom flat. Get over it, we did.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 03/01/2025 22:31

I don’t really know anybody with a stand alone playroom. I know a couple of people who refer to their living room as the playroom because that’s where all the toys are, but it’s still also the room with the TV and sofas where the parents sit in the evening! I do know one other family whose two young children are only a year apart in age, instead of having a bedroom each they have one room with their 2 beds and the other room is set up as a playroom with all of their toys, but once the children are older and want their own rooms I expect they’ll rearrange.

Vinni8 · 03/01/2025 22:33

OP, get on rightmove and look at an area near you that is suitably "normal". Look at the floor plans. You will soon see that the majority of houses do not have space for a playroom assuming all bedrooms are occupied!

purpleblue2 · 03/01/2025 22:34

i think it’s the minority that do have play rooms and the majority that don’t.

MissionaryMumtoOne · 03/01/2025 22:35

We didn’t have a playroom growing up - and we had quite a large house with a lot of downstairs space. We had one everyday living room (we called this the TV room) where we had toys and where everyone would watch TV, a conservatory which had a smaller tv, and we would also play in there as well, and then we had the “posh” living room (we called this the front room) where we never ever went unless we had guests or unless it was Christmas etc. No TV and no toys allowed in the posh living room (unless Christmas Day) and my parents only ever used it to entertain guests. So 3 reception rooms, but neither was a play room.

spoonfulofsugar1 · 03/01/2025 22:36

No playroom here, and my kids share a room which i feel guilty about...
Remember that Instagram is not real. Its peoples presentations of how they want to appear. I got rid of Instagram etc and culled a load of friends on fb as it never did anything for my mental health

Growlybear83 · 03/01/2025 22:37

Of course most people don't have a playroom 😆😆. My daughter's toys were key in her bedroom, the living room, and the spare bedroom where I used to do the ironing. And her toy kitchen as in the middle of the kitchen floor so she could pretend to cook with me.

Samanabanana · 03/01/2025 22:37

On tiktok, everyone earns 200k a year, spends 100k on their wedding, lives their lives aesthetically and enjoys weekly 5k shopping hauls. I smell a lot of bullshit when I'm scrolling tiktok Grin

We do have a playroom OP, the kids never use it and much prefer to spread their toys across the rest of the house. Your kids are not missing out.

wastingtimeonhere · 03/01/2025 22:17

Not only do most kids not have a playroom, ....shock, horror, ...
huge numbers share too.. mn collective clutching pearls

My deprived children have all that and shock,horror...one toilet. Yes, we all use the same lav and so do visitors. Fetch the smelling salts.

Toottooot · 03/01/2025 22:37

My living room is now a playroom. 🤣Instagram fuds should not ever make you feel bad for not having a ‘playroom.’

Isthisexpected · 03/01/2025 22:19

No playroom. But got rid of unnecessary furniture to make one end of the lounge a play area with kitchen, play table for sensory play/drawing/craft etc and toy cars/train set etc to be permanently out. I do feel sorry for kids whose toys have to fit into small storage boxes or under the sofa hidden away. I guess if they're in full time childcare then they aren't home much to play though.

Saucer of milk for you.

Franjipanl8r · 03/01/2025 22:42

Get off of tik tok and start being grateful for what you do have. I personally find separate playrooms a bit depressing, I want my kids in the lounge with us adults all spending family time together.

Comedycook · 03/01/2025 22:43

Our first house didn't have one but in our current house we did have one. It's not a fancy or huge house...just the configuration really. I still call it the playroom and the DC are 13/16 😂Now it's just like a second living room. We live in London and I'd say most people we know don't have one...houses are expensive and small!

By the way, get off social media op...it's full of unrealistic crap.

MsNemo · 03/01/2025 22:45

No playroom around here either and DC are perfectly fine 👍
We seem to have a "playhouse": the entire house is a playroom 😬
