Photo id

I've been finding it increasingly difficult to manage without photo id. Recently got a good deal on an attraction where we pay once and get in free for a year but you need photo id. I looked into getting a provisional driving licence but apparently you can't get one of you have no intention of driving. I can't drive for disability reasons but I'm not severe enough to get PIP or anything like that. I'd rather not get a passport just for id as they are so expensive but I've no idea if I could get a disabled railcard or anything like that. I've got my diagnosis letter and ed psych report from 2002 but no other proof of my disability.

I've never heard this about provisional licenses. You can have one from 15 years and 9 months but would be unable to drive at that age. So this about no intention of driving can't be accurate. Just apply for one.

I would think that would be different if you can't drive due to disability, because at 15y 9months you can drive a motorbike from age 16yo, and I think I'm right in saying licences have a valid from date as well as valid to date.
Dd had to be assessed for her disability before they would issue her provisional licence, and there was no doubt that she would be allowed to drive.

Voting ID or passport is your best bet.

Thank you. I've got a voting id thing but i thought you could only use it for voting.

Provisional licenses have 10 years on them. You have 2 years from your pass date of your written theory test to pass your actual driving test.

It's like saying you can't have a passport because you have no intention of travelling abroad ? Not a thing.

Ihatethiscold · 03/01/2025 21:01

Just apply for a provisional licence ? They don't ask you whether you intend to drive.

There are other forms of photo id. You can get one form so you can take a domestic flight in the UK. Not sure exactly what it is or how much it costs though. Might be cheaper than a provisional.

I agree, OP, and am getting a passport even though I can't afford the damn thing, let alone foreign travel! I stopped driving when my licence expired, as I've now got illnesses that could make me a safety risk (and can't afford a car, anyway).

It's everywhere. Can't sell on Vinted - well, I could, but I couldn't take my proceeds out. Can't sign up for paid surveys. I even need a sodding passport or driving licence to get the last £100 out of an old bank account, and that's the money for the passport fee!

Actual government things can be done with one of the cheaper official IDs but even that's getting more difficult. I wish we had identity cards in this country, like they have almost everywhere else. Then citizens with low incomes would get 'em free or for a nominal sum.

Look into a Citizen Card. All confirmation and stuff can be done by your medical people

You can't use voter photo id for any other id purposes.
There should always be alternatives - this year was the first time I've had a passport in 30nyears, but I have always managed by providing several other forms of id - it is a real pain though:-(
