What words or terms would you put in a Mumsnet “anti-glossary”?

Inspired by a couple of posts I’ve seen recently, what words or phrases really “give you the ick”, that you’d love to see in a list of them to be banned or redacted?

The posts I’ve seen recently would suggest “hubby” and “picky bits” as a couple of prime contenders.

I personally would suggest “hun” when used as a bit of a pejorative, but it doesn’t bother me so much when it’s used in a more conciliatory or supportive way.

Also, “giving me the ick” is actually giving me the ick…

Call it/them out - on anything

Use of the word 'folk' or 'folks' - for some reason it just irritates me and can't work out why.

And absolutely the use of 'Wow' as a disapproval.

And quite a few others that many have mentioned

Large of nork makes me cringe
Wow, just wow
Ddog, Dcat etc is ridiculous along with fur baby
Naice house / area etc again cringey
Red flag - everything is a red flag these days apparently

And as I am likely guilty of using phrases others dislike I’ll add :
Cringe 😬

Hubby

Spenny

Where on earth did that word come from?!? I can't stand it.

Anyone who starts a sentence with “so”
Anyone who writes something was “super”; super clean, super long

Just no.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 04/01/2025 11:01

Another one ! When an Op puts “Dr here”, “teacher here”.🙄

Yes, it sounds so pompous

Anewuser · 04/01/2025 11:07

.

Just typing a full stop seems so bloody lazy.

Either add to the thread or ‘watch’ it.

upshot · 04/01/2025 11:08

'Get a free half hour' for any kind of legal advice, however complex. Yup, that should sort it.

Veggies

’Comparison is the thief of joy’, and in the same breath comparing them to someone worse off so they feel better. Of course people compare things, you’d do it at the supermarket to see what’s a good deal. You really mean being envious ultimately makes you sad!

I hate that phrase the most.

PontiacFirebird · 04/01/2025 11:23

Pjs and Uni.
I hear them both in a really wheedly sort of voice. “ I came back from yew-neee and was sat in my peee- jays” and it makes me inexplicably angry.
Also, the peejay people are the ones who get into them every day at 8 pm and never answer the door. Don’t ask me how I know, but I know.

Bloom15 · 04/01/2025 11:25

It's an invitation not a summons 🤮

The poster knows this but usually wants a nice way to decline. Even though some posters going about 'no is a complete sentence' - you're a wanker if someone invites you out or to an event and your full response is "no".

Nextyearhopes · 04/01/2025 11:28

Mama/Bubs (mama is ok if you are Italian or Spanish, otherwise what is wrong with mum and baby)

wow just wow
baby bubble (get over yourself)

NeverHadHaveHas · 04/01/2025 11:29

When someone describes another person as ‘scum’. I feel that using that word immediately marks someone out as being a bit thick.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 04/01/2025 11:30

Is that a "thing"?

This phrase and variations of it are everywhere now! It gives me the rage.

I asked DH and he says...

Interesting first post

Cool story bro

Dontlletmedownbruce · 04/01/2025 11:40

Twee
In truth I don't understand what it means. I looked it up but still don't really get it. It's one of those words that isn't ever used where I'm from so I don't have a proper context.

zingally · 04/01/2025 11:43

I hate the phrase, "I was just tucking into my dinner when..."

"Tucking in" to describe eating just sounds so twee to me. Makes me think of a character from a 1950s Enid Blyton book. "Oooh! Let's tuck into this delightful jam sponge chaps! Wizard!"
