Picky bits?

I hate this! I saw it on a M&S advert and it gave me the willies. I don't know why it sounds gross but it puts me off food as does 'dirty' fries. Yeuch!

My husband's family call it picky bits, or picky tea which I find weird. My family always called it 'bread and stuff' for tea.

Rosesgrowonyou · 03/01/2025 17:08

It doesn't bother me. Seems to be a thing to hate on MN though,

Thewhisperingwindsofwinter · 03/01/2025 17:15

I agree op picky bits is horrible. I seen picky bits buffet before and I was like no, you have a buffet or picky bits not both together.

HansHolbein · 03/01/2025 17:15

Reminds me of scabs. I don’t know why.

Augustus40 · 03/01/2025 17:16

Sounds common. Am I being judgy.

pestowithwalnuts · 03/01/2025 17:18

We call it 'party tea'

HackGrey · 03/01/2025 17:36

Picky tea 🤬🤬🤬

whiteswan87 · 03/01/2025 17:38

Yes it makes my teeth itch! Hate the phrase!

soupfiend · 03/01/2025 17:38

I like a picky tea, Im out and proud about it, Im being my true picky tea self

Picky bits are bits you can pick at surely?

All over the table, all night, getting up from the sofa for another plate of picky bits

Get me some cheese straws while you're up please!

Sickofitalltonight · 03/01/2025 17:41

I detest the phrase "Picky bits" or any variation on this using 'picky'. Utterly revolting.

Gymnopedie · 03/01/2025 17:43

The components of a good picky tea are what my grandmother used to serve on Christmas night after a turkey dinner. So here it's known as a Christmas night tea - even in June.

AlteredStater · 03/01/2025 17:44

I call it a 'fractal meal'. 'Picky bits' is a bit yeuchhh.

Stuffisperplexing · 03/01/2025 17:44

It's intolerable

Betchyaby · 03/01/2025 17:45

Guilty. We say picky bits amongst my friends and family. Maybe it's regional?

Chorizmo · 03/01/2025 17:45

We call tapas

BreakHerOffAKitKat · 03/01/2025 17:47

We used to call it a choosey tea growing up - because you get to choose what you want from all the picky bits laid out

Nc54684 · 03/01/2025 17:47

Only heard it for the first time in the last couple of years (in my 30s) I do wonder if it’s a regional thing?

I don’t really like it but don’t generally tell people !

It just sounds like bits picked off the floor or like scabs being picked. Maybe as a child we might have called it a picnic tea or picnic supper? I don’t know

soupfiend · 03/01/2025 17:47

Is it as revolting as a bowl of sick or dog shit?

Where does it sit on the revoltingometer?

K0OLA1D · 03/01/2025 17:48

We have a picky tea quite often. It's youngest dcs fave

Himawarigirl · 03/01/2025 17:48

My family (I.e. my mum) have always called it that and I thought nothing of it until I said it once and my husband thought it was utterly revolting. The more disgusting interpretations of it had never occurred to me but I don’t use it now, he says it makes him think of feet or gross bodily habits.

StockbridgeovertheRiverKwai · 03/01/2025 17:49

Class signifier perhaps?

How is picky bits not a buffet? Surely you wouldn't plate up picky bits in the kitchen and bring it out like that.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/01/2025 17:51

Indoor picnic here

BobbyBiscuits · 03/01/2025 17:53

It does sound naff. And unhygienic. Like lots of people all picking up food and double dipping all over the place.
The phrase 'gives me the willies' is pretty unpleasant to my ears. For obvious reasons!

WhatNoRaisins · 03/01/2025 17:54

Yeah it's a phrase that I can't get on board with.
