I've been floored since Sunday/Monday with some awful flu-like virus. I literally feel I get worse everyday. I have barely slept in 5 days as anytime I fall asleep, I'll wake myself up 15 minutes later choking and having a coughing fit. I've been so congested too, body aches, shivering and feeling like getting out of bed is a marathon. I have been taking ibuprofen and lemsips as often as I can but not sure either is helping. I just need a decent sleep! Can anyone recommend anything else to try please, a good cough bottle etc? Thanks in advance, feeling very sorry for myself!

Try paracemol?
Go see the GP if you don't getter better soon. Could be pneumonia.

MissBPotter · 03/01/2025 04:12

Have you contacted your GP? If a virus not much they can do but could be something like a chest infection and you’ll need appropriate antibiotics or you could contract pneumonia. I had this last year and it was horrible but the antibiotics did work when I eventually got out on the right ones.

Sudo fed is brilliant - they do night and day capusules. Plus the nose spray.which clears your blocked up nose instantly. That is one thing that’s fab

Vicks on your chest and back.

have at least 5 pillows and almost prop your self up to sleep

it’s bad I had it 2 weeks ago now my kids have it

Cough medicine done them all not one is is good - Benadryl and coop own brand seem to settle me the best

check lemsip doesn’t have caffeine in that might kept you awake at night time

Good luck

I had this. Folded over my pillows and slept sitting up. The coughing in the morning was awful though.

coldscottishmum · 03/01/2025 04:28

DH had something similar and he felt awful. He was having paracetamol and ibrufen rotated every 6 hours, slept with a hot water bottle but was between shivering and sweating. In the end he needed antibiotics as it had just gone for his chest, can you phone your GP in the morning? Hot water and lemon helped the sore throat from coughing too. I hope your better soon OP! X

Night Nurse - knocks me out!

Itonlytakesone · 03/01/2025 04:41

Night nurse!

CharlotteCChapel · 03/01/2025 04:43

Sleep sitting up.

MrsMagoooo · 03/01/2025 04:45

Another vote for the liquid bottle of Night Nurse, totally knocks me out and has decongestant.

MountKilimounjaro · 03/01/2025 04:47

Day & Night pills work amazingly.

And I know it sounds like an old wives tale but trust me on this one, slather the soles of your feet in vapour rub and then put on a pair of socks, it will stop your coughing within minutes.

My whole household has a similar illness and they've all been awake coughing for about an hour - I've just finished my rounds with socks and Vicks, at last silence and just the sound of everyone sleeping (including my husband who steadfastly refused to believe it would work).

ShrimpBoil · 03/01/2025 04:57

Yep vicks on feet and night nurse! Get well soon.

Ceeekay · 03/01/2025 04:57

Definitely go to a GP

Haveacuppaandwaitforthistoblowover · 03/01/2025 05:11

Root ginger crushed with pure orange juice (not concentrated shite). Drink about 300ml with 2 chunks of crushed ginger and swallow it all! Take ibuprofen also.
The ginger is natual anti inflammatory and good in general for your health and the orange juice has vitamin C which helps you absorb the goodness. Plus it's a refreshing drink! Then some honey for your throat!

Ibuprofen also anti inflammatory and painkiller... but can cause stomach issues.

Feel better soon, you will get over this x

My sympathies Op, I have had something similar (hence me being awake since 4 am). I am starting to feel better but reading all these replies for next time!

Hope you feel better soon.

Lemsip contains a full dose of paracetamol so be mindful to factor that in to your dosing if you do want to try tablets eg. If you have 2 lemsip you can only have 2 doses of paracetamol, at least 4 hours apart in 24 hours.

Alfiethecavapoo · 03/01/2025 09:17

Thanks for the suggestions and definitely going to get some Vicks (how could I forget about that). I've ended up getting a last minute gp appointment as it's day 6 and if anything I am choking and more breathless than I had been so thought it is worth getting checked out before the weekend incase it's moved to my chest/ lungs.

Me too OP! Coughing my guts out, it sounds like when my DS’ had croup when they were little. I’ve been to the doctor and had steroids prescribed as I’m also asthmatic but they haven’t done anything so I think it can only be viral rather than asthma related. It’s just not gotten any better in over a week and like you I need a proper sleep. As does DH who has to crash on the sofa as my coughing is so loud!

I’ve had night nurse, Vicks on feet, I’ve got DS’ Vicks Vapouriser machine blasting in my face all night, mountains of pillows…but the barking cough continues. It starts getting really bad late afternoon and then worse through the evening, anyone else find that?

Yes definitely worse at night for me too. I had a brief period of feeling better yesterday as I'd gotten more sleep on Friday evening but it hit me again like a tonne of bricks in the afternoon. Last night was the worst night and choking every few minutes so barely slept. Muscles have seized up too so can hardly walk either. It's just so horrible and this is day 8 for me. Doctor said chest sounded fine too so couldn't give me anything, just got to ride it out with cough syrup, Vicks, lemsips etc. I'm usually at the gym 5 times a week! Feeling beyond sorry for myself!
