Does anyone else still feel in the midst of Christmas and going with it…

Granted I don’t go back work until

next week and appreciate that’s not the same for everyone but is anyone else still hanging out in there Christmas PJ’s, having a daily cheese board and luxurious mid day bubble bath and saying fuck it to a glass of fizz at 4pm?

I can’t be the only one?

Boxing Day is part of Christmas, not for taking decorations down. I appreciate people do that and want to do that, but I find it weird. I don't understand the "deep clean" brigade either unless the tree and other stuff had been up for weeks and weeks. Mine go up after a good fettling and usually around 20 December. I've still managed to do all my usual housework unimpeded by a Christmas tree in the corner and some greenery!

Still enjoying Christmas treats here - although not sweets as I'm not a chocolate fan. Sadly we finished the Ham with some egg and chips for tea tonight. Christmas Pudding is being shared with the birds although they don't get the cream or the custard!! Was given a fair bit of Booze but we will get through that during the summer and a couple of boxes of biscuits. Not even cut the cake yet and still have two boxes of Mince Pies. The freezer will keep us supplied with all the nibbles that we bought plus frozen leftovers to go in curries and still have the prawns to look forward to.
Christmas decorations are disappearing up to the spare room each time I go upstairs awaiting the boxes to come down from the loft. Christmas mugs wrapped and ready to be stored too and I bought two more in the sales! I wouldn't pay £8 per mug but don't mind £2!!
The tree is still flashing away in the corner and the outside one won't be stripped of its lights until we have a dry day and it's not so cold!! Might look really pretty with the snow if it happens! We were planning on chopping it down but were unable to find a potted spruce to replace it. So have decided to try and grow some from seed and maybe trim the current spruce to last another year. The seeds have arrived with starting compost - it will either fail dismally or we will have 24 spruces to share around! 🌲🌲🌲
GCs were still watching Christmas Movies when we looked after them today. Have never done a PJ day in my life so can definitely say that won't be happening in this house. But I'm happy to go along with the rest for however long it lasts!!

xmas for me and mine (just me, and my tween kids) is about the run up to xmas, and the day itself - they are excited about gifts and an extra nice meal with crackers and hats, and I go all out in the run up with the elf on the shelf, and the decorations - and the decs are up from the end of November, so by Boxing Day, I've had a full month of THREE trees in the house, tinsel galore, lights twinkling in every room and I am so so ready to get it put away on Boxing Day - my kids are away so it's just me in the house, and I generally feel xmas is for kids. I enjoy my clean uncluttered rooms back. I do leave some lights in the front garden tree all year round, so there's always a little bit of twinkliness here, plus a special little tree in the living room that is festive year round, but the rest are boxed up on boxing day and it feels great. I find it weird not putting a tree up til a few days before xmas - I love the build up from the start of december if not before.

As pp have pointed out, we ARE still in the midst of Christmas until Epiphany on the 6th. And if you really want to eke it out, you could embrace a range of festivals from now until February. Got an apple tree? Wassail it. Support your local mumming play (it is Mumsnet, after all -I’ll get me coat). Anyone in Wales can enjoy the Mari Llwd, Britain is very rich in folklore. 13th January is Plough Monday when traditionally people took up their tools of work again and got going - until the next festival, that is.

Work2live · 03/01/2025 00:08

I took the tree down today as we have plans the next few days and are back to work on Monday. I didn’t want the tree to be up when life returns to ‘normal’. Otherwise I might’ve left it up til the weekend. I did have a Baileys tonight though, a tradition that will continue until whenever I finish the bottle 😂 still got loads of Xmas chocs and cheese to get through too.

I normally find this time of year incredibly depressing but I’m trying to change my mindset this year. We’ve got some nice things planned this month to look forward to.

Also toying with the idea of putting some subtle fairy lights back up in the living room, they really do seem to improve my mood.

I'm in Scotland so this is still an official day off for New Year - full Xmas dinner again for us and first footing yesterday which was lovely (alternating strong gins with cups of tea and getting stuck into the party snacks). No intention of taking the tree down until Monday night. Heavy snow here today so it feels even more festive, especially with stollen for breakfast!

Traditionally, it would take you a number of weekends to get through friends and family visiting for New Year so that would often take you to at least Burns Night. The worst part of winter is still to come so we need to be kind to ourselves and let ourselves have some fun for as long as possible.

stargirl1701 · 03/01/2025 00:32

We're just back from PILs today after staying for Hogmanay and New Year. Friends coming for lunch tomorrow and we're exchanging gifts.

Our camels and kings are making their way from room to room but haven't reached the stable yet!

Baking on Saturday - DC will do crown biscuits and I need to ice the fruit cake.

I'll find the picture books the DC have traditionally read on Twelfth Night on Sat too.

Fabric crowns to wear at the dinner table with crown tea light holders are in the sideboard.

Still Christmas here!

LadyGAgain · 03/01/2025 00:36

Yup! All decs and lights still up!

PrimalLass · 03/01/2025 00:38

I find it weird not putting a tree up til a few days before xmas - I love the build up from the start of december if not before.

For us Christmas is the school and work holidays - not the start of December when I have to travel with work and we are stressed about getting everything done. I like to get to the day I put my out of office on then throw myself into it.

stargirl1701 · 03/01/2025 00:42

We observe Advent in December during the build up to Christmas.

I don't understand how you can fit celebrating Christmas into working life during December. Don't your DC end up exhausted and fractious being so busy whilst still going to school and doing extra-curriculars?

DH and I are always off for the entirety of the Christmas school break so it is easier for us to celebrate then.

pizzaHeart · 03/01/2025 01:00

We all are due “back to life next Monday” but our Christmas spirit is weakened. There are still lots of Christmas treats in the cupboard and we have a few Christmassy activities this week but Christmas tree is coming down tomorrow and Christmas sweaters are packed away already. Christmas music and Christmas films moved firmly in the “next year” category.

LeavesTrees · 03/01/2025 01:05

We are still munching through the Christmas treats, drinking the last of the alcohol and watching films with the twinkling Christmas lights on in our PJs.
Dreading Monday when everything goes back to ‘normal’.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/01/2025 01:05

Yes, but taking tree down tomorrow. 😢
Had fancy hot chocolate today and hot apple cider. Still have lots of dessert in the freezer and will likely have some tonight. 😋

Rainbow1901 · 03/01/2025 10:57

Found a bottle of Mulled Wine while tidying up!! Will enjoy that for the next few evenings!! 🍷

toastedcrumpetsrock · 03/01/2025 12:22

Still in the midst and loving it - decs down Sunday night ready for school on Monday.
Haven't eaten the Christmas pudding yet, dc still in pj's watching Xmas films

GameOfJones · 03/01/2025 13:09

@PontiacFirebird that is how I feel about January too. I really try to embrace it.....no point wishing it precious time away and feeling miserable for an entire month of the year!

January for me is for walks in the fresh air, decluttering the house, trying out new recipes, reading books etc. No pressure after Christmas and we tend to live quite simply. More relaxing and less dashing about at weekends!

I'm still clinging on to the Christmas food though and we're enjoying eating up what we have in the house and not needing to do a big shop at the supermarket. I had a brie and cranberry toastie at lunchtime!

Peridot1 · 03/01/2025 13:25

Still Christmas here. Trees and decorations still up. Although I’m starting to take some down. Took the cards down this morning and am sorting through Christmas table linens etc. I seem to have loads and lots of it I never use so I’ve decided to sort through and have a bit of a cull. I need to do the same with decorations.

We still have lots of Christmas food. I have just had pate and crackers for lunch and some biscuits after. Lots of chocolates left too but we will gradually get through them.

Christmas trees will come down on Monday. I’m going to leave some lights around though and some of the battery candles we have.

Peridot1 · 03/01/2025 13:26

Oh I saw a reel on FB last night of a family in the US who take down the Christmas tree and decorations as soon as all of the presents have been opened on Christmas morning! 8am and they were taking everything down.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 03/01/2025 13:33

We’ve still got some presents from DH’s family to open (we couldn’t go and see them this year due to contagious children) but I’m really not feeling festive anymore. I now just have a whole bunch of toys to sort and put away and I desperately need to do a food shop. Decs will come down this weekend.

DH has been back at work since yesterday but the kids aren’t back until Monday. I’m on mat leave so trying to wrangle all three of them whilst they’re overtired and overstimulated is miserable. Can’t go anywhere because it’s DS’s turn with the contagious disease and he’s breastfed. 🫠

Gnomegarden32 · 03/01/2025 13:40

Yes! I think I am now 80% trifle.

MindfulBear · 03/01/2025 13:42

You are not alone! Due to sickness we had to postpone Christmas lunch. So we still have Christmas pudding and masses of cheese to eat, as well as left over ham and beef. 😋
Tonight - baked Camembert? And again tomorrow...?! Don't mind if I do!!!

dothedanceofjoy · 03/01/2025 13:43

I was back to work yesterday and today, but I am planning on a mini extension of Christmas over the weekend before the tree comes down and DD goes back to uni. It's going to be cold too, so perfect.

I have nice food and films to watch and a new sweater hopefully to be delivered tomorrow.

MindfulBear · 03/01/2025 13:44

And yes. Full Christmas decs are still up.

Kids are back at school Monday / Tuesday and I'm back at work on Tuesday so decs need to be down and packed in the loft by then.

In the meantime I'm still listening to Christmas tunes!!!

Wrongsideofpennines · 03/01/2025 13:45

Still got the decorations up, made a gingerbread house yesterday, wearing Christmas Jumpers and socks, reading Christmas's stories to the kids, watching Christmas TV still.

NewHabits2025 · 03/01/2025 13:52

Nope. It's all coming down today! Am done.
