Successful small business ideas

Hi everyone,

they New Year has come around and I’m back at work doing my job again. It’s fine, but I really struggle with motivation to get anything done unless there’s a tight deadline or some kind of reward/recognition.

I'm currently doing a masters through work and am top of the class because the reward to me is the assignment grade.

I’ve always excelled academically because of this, but plod along in jobs, doing fairly well but certainly not excelling or really enjoying it as there’s no real reward for excelling over being average.

I started a property business on the side in 2018, which was doing well but sadly was killed by covid. Despite it being v stressful with a full time job, being a single mum (at the time) and running the business, the business made me feel alive as there was a correlation between effort and reward.

I think I would be better/more successful in my career as a business owner rather than an employee and am beginning to brainstorm ideas for small businesses that I can start alongside my current job.

Current thoughts are:

  • Consulting in my current job expertise (but this doesn’t fill me with excitement)
  • Print on demand Etsy or equivalent (but this is quite saturated unless I find a great niche)
  • Health supplements (but might require a significant up front outlay)

If any of you, or someone you know has formed a successful business alongside their current job, would you mind sharing? Would be great to get some more inspiration 😊

When you say property business, what did that involve?

Starting a business in something that you already have knowledge about, or are very passionate or get excited about is the best starting point.

I rented whole tired HMOs, did them up then rented them to professionals room by room. Sadly the market plummeted for individual rooms in covid as people went back to live with their parents. I sold my half of the business to my business partner.
