Hi all,
I'm hoping someone may advise as I'm clueless.

I've got a new phone (will switch the SIM card). If I put my old SIM card in my old phone, I'm assuming all my WhatsApp conversations etc will disappear? If so, how do I save a WhatsApp conversation?

This is important as I need to keep messages as I'm in a difficult relationship and may need them in the future as evidence.

Mine didn’t disappear when I changed sim as I moved network. WhatsApp is on your phone number so if it’s the same number you shouldn’t lose anything?

@BashfulClam thank you. The only issue is that my Google drive is full, so I haven't been able to back up my WhatsApp for a while. I'm worried about risking them disappearing as they are all I have.

I’m not sure as I have Apple so my phone is all backed up automatically and when you move over to a new phone it just comes up exactly the same as your previous device.

Might be worth signing up to the paid version of Google drive to get robust backup of everything. You can always cancel in a month if needed.

If you do this, leave the phone on and plugged in overnight at least to fully back up before you switch the sim. And take screenshots of the messages.

If it's not backed up then you will loose them. When you install it on the new phone it looks for the back up.

If they are not backed up they won't transfer. This happened to me and I lost the last month of messages from my brother who died in 2024.

Get a USB stick and move a lot of photos from your Google Drive to the stick. Back up your WhatsApp messages to your drive. Include the formatting or you lose any images/screenshots.

Then copy your WhatsApp back up to a USB stick.

Alternatively, get a free Dropbox account and copy your Google Drive to that. Then back up your WhatsApp.

You need to back up the chat and restore it. No other way to retain

Dbank · 01/01/2025 21:58

Presumably it's an Android phone?

TheSmallAssassin · 01/01/2025 22:05

You could buy more storage on Google One? It starts at £1.79 a month. You will lose your WhatsApp messages unless they are backed up..

I'm so sorry to hear that 😔 that must have been awful for you.

Thank you all for the advice. I've managed to find my google drive account and ma deletingots to make space (I can't believe all the pointless photos there). I'm hoping then to backup WhatsApp.
