Has anyone been to Rio?

I have a trip planned this spring and I am just wondering how safe it is. We are staying near Copacabana and have organized trips plans. Do we we special anti theft handbags or will small cross bodies be ok?
Any other tips?

Great city, lots to see, lovely people but I didn’t even wear my wedding ring - we left everything in hotel room safe. I’d heard horror stories of jewellery theft in broad daylight, first hand from friends on frontline Copacabana too.
