What are the stereotypes that surround your job? (LIghthearted)

Inspired by recent threads. Are you an AI level of empathy PIP assessor? A misogynistic policeman? A somewhat silly spy? A socially awkward IT person?

I've been a "Too young" nanny/au pair, A tour guide who is "Just having a free holiday" a barmaid...etc...

All nurses are party animals though...(just to get you all going)

That we get paid for every child that is taken into care and/or adopted

AutoP1lot · 31/12/2024 21:45

I'm an accountant so I'm obviously boring, uptight, antisocial and awkward.

Social worker?

Linkle · 31/12/2024 21:50

I think it's so funny that this has turned into a guessing thread for OP.

I career changed to be a software engineer and I do think that generally the stereotypes about being socially awkward are more true than I expected. I've come from very sociable jobs with extroverted colleagues (teachers, social workers etc) so it's been quite a difference.

I am not exactly larger than life myself but in some cases it's been quite extreme eg people not engaging in meetings even when spoken to directly.

My current team is on the more sociable side but even then, there's very little small talk. Even after work at the pub, conversation tends to revolve around work. I find instead of talking about hobbies, family etc. people get really into talking about tech and their specific interests within that. They are mostly lovely but it's taken me over a year to get to know them as well as I knew people at previous jobs within a week.

cariadlet · 31/12/2024 21:52

Other people say they couldn't do my job because managing their own is hard work but at the same time a lot of people know how I should be doing my job, could do it better and would be within their rights to storm into my work place and tear me a new one if they think I'm doing it wrong.
Plus I'm a terrible whinger as are my colleagues.

Hate-filled goblin who works entirely for the benefit and protection of The Company while proactively seeking out opportunities to shit all over The People (blameless little angels with minty breath and shiny hair who always eat their vegetables). Any spare time is used to design new forms to aid in the screwing-over process. Oh, and practice our evil cackling in our fully kitted out torture dungeons.

HR.

Teacher.

If not then childminder or nursery nurse. But the whinger part makes me think teacher. Not because I think teachers are whiny mind you.

Yes, teacher.

I don't come across the whingey stereotype in RL but I do on Mumsnet.
Tbf, I don't come across whingey teachers in RL either but some of the ones on Mumsnet don't help. 🤣

Have you read / listened to any novels by Ollie Jarvis? They’re really rather good

Isseywith2witchycats · 31/12/2024 22:07

For my job which is a volunteer older person at a charity shop is that Im old, got no friends, am lonely, don't know good stuff from rubbish . Im rude , should be grateful that people donate stuff that should have gone to the tip from their house clearance, The truth is until a few months ago i was one of the fundraisers for the charity on Ebay so do know what is good and what is so called vintage rubbish, am polite and friendly, my OH and i are bikers so have a large social scene , not allowed to turn down donations so we have to accept the good with the bad

Nope. I stay firmly away from anything that resembles work in RL!

No we can't keep bad people in prison just becuase they are thinking of committing another offence. And we aren't housing officers.

I work in tech and the percentage of stereotypical IT nerds who sport beards and wear Star Wars T-shirts is very high. Especially the younger lot just coming into the field
