RIP Johnnie. Lifelong fan here. Sorry you didn't get to see 2025 but I'll raise a glass to you.

Lovely tributes on Sounds of the 70s now with Bob Harris.

I think Bob must have had at least an hour two's warning (and they held back the announcement) because he is handling this show magnificently.
Johnnie Walker was one of the greats - fab radio voice.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 31/12/2024 18:02

very sad,
i felt it must be imminent.
he worked up until the end.
RIP and condolences to all who knew him

One of the proper old-school DJ's - they don't make 'em like that any more.

Very sad news, he’s been the soundtrack to my life - as teenager on Radio 1, the commuting years on Radio 2 and as a mum doing the ironing on a Sunday afternoon. Lovely tribute show by Bob Harris.

Reported my previous post to remove the accidental GIF

Oh that is so sad. I listened to his announcement a few weeks back that he was giving up due to his health.

Very sad news

SnakesAndArrows · 31/12/2024 18:16

So sad. A real music specialist DJ, and a gent by all accounts. RIP Johnnie. 😢

Doyouthinktheyknow · 31/12/2024 18:18

Loved Johnnie Walker, an amazing broadcaster, so knowledgeable and effortless at what he did. RIP💙

RaininSummer · 31/12/2024 18:26

Just seen the news on bbc1. He was a good looking chap. Never realised that.

TamzinGrey · 31/12/2024 18:27

So very sad. I had a massive crush on him at the age of 13 during his pirate radio days. I can remember listening to him on Radio Caroline until very late on school nights, when I was supposed to be asleep. I would curl up deep beneath the bedcovers with my transistor radio pressed up tight against my ear, hoping that my mother wouldn't come in and catch me.

Autumn1990 · 31/12/2024 18:29

I was thinking about him and wondering how he was doing the other day. Great DJ and always came a raw such as lovely person. I remember he saying there are two types of people in life, radiators and drains, so true!

Hotafternoon · 31/12/2024 18:47

Used to listen to him in the 70s as a teenager but didn't listen very often over the last few years.

My dad did, he always listened on a Sunday afternoon.

Sad to hear the news, he was a great DJ back then when music was the main part of the show, not shouting, shrieking with laughter and talking over the tracks as often happens today.
