How did you prepare for your first tutoring session? Did you ask about the student’s needs or requirements beforehand, or did you plan a general lesson to start with? I’d appreciate any tips!

As a parent, I would have expected to have briefed you beforehand as to what I saw the issues as and what I wanted from the tutoring, and I would have expected you to prep something to assess / confirm the situation.

What age and subject?

I chat with the parents about what they feel their child needs help with, whether there are any additional learning needs, any specific targets from school etc. Then I plan a fun first session, with plenty of open ended, hands on activities and games. I tutor primary English and maths. I'm very flexible in the first session, following the child's lead, and find I can make assessments as we go which give me a good idea of what's needed and where to go next.
