Are Ottoman beds comfortable?

foyc · 29/12/2024 09:30

My policy the last 10 years or so has been to spend a lot of money on very good quality mattresses, but basic divan bedstead because they provide a solid and quiet base. This comes from having cheap slatted beds in my early adult years, that you could feel the slats, were creaky etc.

I want to update our bedstead with a stone grey/beige divan and high head board, the ones I can find that have the headboard I want are Ottoman beds, I worry that the bed itself will be too cheap and will rattle, make creaky noises etc. Our mattress cost £2000 so I don't want to ruin it on a cheap ottoman!

Are ottomans solid? This is the kind I like the look of: https://dusk.com/products/madison-ottoman-storage-bed-stone-grey?variant=48972346261801&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0BMABhZGlkAasVyBHyYwABHdS6NSgyWm7reQCMe-NhQegiSJYvMBzXPMpVzuLc9JlIwZ2X2nHNtE9KIQaemmNhJAvbZLJfdQBmcLDMZlg&utmmsource=facebook&utmmedium=paid&campaignnid=120202631513500336&adid=120213763860020336

That's pretty cheap even at full price, I would be wary especially as you can't physically touch it see it, I wouldn't .
But mumsnet is huge and loads of ppl will say it's a bargain therefore could be shoddy or it too expensive and you're silly for paying that!

You will get opposite advice all day long .
Always buy the best bed & shoes you can afford.
I would go to a bed shop and have a proper look.

@Hskatkat thanks, our divan was quite cheap but then it's just a box so there's not much required to need to be good quality! Honestly wish I could just find another divan base with the headboard I want.

My ottoman bed is great. I agree it's hard to tell from many online shop.

foyc · 29/12/2024 11:26

I normally go to Benson or Dreams but they don't have what I am after, their headboard choices are quite limited to get the divan base matching.

I bought my last ottoman and mattress from Mattisons Beds. They are a British Company that mainly sell to the hospitality sector, but sell to the general public as well. I think they are a very good quality and value for money.

You can choose the headboard and its cover as well. My ottoman bed is made in UK and is guaranteed for 25 years! The guarantee tells me they have faith in their quality.

My ottoman bed is similar to the one above. It has a solid divan base. We e had it for ten years now and never had an issue with it. Extremely comfortable to sleep on. Mg sister has an ottoman bed with a slatted base and said it doesn't feel as solid as a divan base

TianasBayou · 29/12/2024 11:40

We have a Feather & Black ottoman with a solid rather than slatted base.

It's very heavy and solid. Doesn't move at all.

Hskatkat · 29/12/2024 11:43

Feather and black was bought out by dreams ( I think it's them) and the quality is nowhere near the as good as it was /should be.
We bought and returned three of the same bed.

How is it at lifting up to access storage?

Pleasantly surprised with my Dusk Ottoman. I'm going to buy another one for my DD.

TianasBayou · 29/12/2024 12:55

@WaitingforStrike it has a gas lift strut so not too bad (ours is a super king with a very heavy mattress).

@Hskatkat mine is 3 years old so I think it was bought after the buyout - showroom upstairs in Dreams.

Hskatkat · 29/12/2024 13:17

2021 it was bought out so you may have missed it @TianasBayou but the fact it was in a dreams suggests not but I don't know, it was just a heads up. It wasn't a dig at you.
It's the same when any company gets bought for it's brand name
My mother's F&B was beautiful, the bed(s) I received were the quality of Argos .

TianasBayou · 29/12/2024 16:09

Probably on the cusp! It was heavily discounted so ma have been original F&B stock. Thanks.

Flubadubba · 29/12/2024 16:11

Also have a Dusk Ottoman and have had zero issues. Pretty sturdy.

Worsethingshappenatsea · 29/12/2024 16:32

I've got this exact bed and love it ! Bought on recommendation from a friend who also has same bed it's very sturdy had mine for nearly a year now no issues at all

Icanbeamassiveoverthinker · 29/12/2024 21:06

I love my gas lift ottoman bed , so comfy!!
although since I saw an article recently where a woman died as it closed on her, trapping her neck) I will not lift it up when I'm alone in the house

annlee3817 · 29/12/2024 21:27

We have two ottoman beds in our house, ours was from Next, and in the sale was still £550, my daughter's cost just over £200 and definitely a difference in quality, sleep wise both are comfortable, but ours is a lot sturdier
