I know it’s a topic that has been done before.
but what film do you think would not be made now and why?
mine is, every which way but loose.
yep the Clint Eastwood film with the orangutan

There's not reason they couldn't make this now. The orangutan would just be Andy Serkis under a pile of CGI instead of a real one!

90sFilms · 28/12/2024 23:32

Dunston checks in I hope would be made now without CGI
Loved the film ... don't like Hollywood animals being used

IWasWonderin · 28/12/2024 23:33

I found The Misfits very disturbing. Marilyn Monroe’s character seems infantile. And when Clark Gable wakes her up by rubbing her arm and kissing her, after she said she wasn’t interested in him that way. Ick.

I will try to watch the film all the way through, but I have seen less discomforting depictions of women in far far older films.

An American in Paris.
That felt uncomfortable to watch as an adult. The soundtrack is just gorgeous but the way the main character pursued that poor lass was just not on.

The same is true of many "romance" films, where the hero is a stalker.

Yul Brynner doing yellow face in The King and I

Pretty much every 1970s sit com.

I saw the play in San Francisco.
He wasn’t “doing yellow face” live.

All of the posts on this thread are the reason why I'm SO glad that DH and I have our extensive 1500-strong DVD library. 100s and 100s and 100s of old (and old-ish) feature films, sitcoms, dramas, TV Box Sets, stand up comedy shows from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, and old TV shows and TV films from pre 2010s. (Some stuff from the 1960s and earlier too.) All before the wokerati got their grubby little mitts on it all, and ruined the 'streamed' versions, and new copies of it on DVD or download - during the 2010s.

DH and I have tried to watch about a number different TV shows and films on the TV this past few years , and they have been unwatchable (including FRIENDS.)

Edited to death. Almost unrecognisable compared to its original self. Butchered, censored, and in many cases, making no sense.

We watch most stuff (pre 2010s) on DVD now. The woke/censored versions are unbearable and unwatchable. As I said, thank GOD we have so much on DVD. And thank GOD everything is the original, authentic version!

Even a few of our friends and family - including adult DD aged 30-ish have started asking to borrow our DVDs, that have the original versions of films and TV shows that they like/once watched, (and want to watch again.) Because they are now unwatchable on TV/streaming, as so much has been chopped out/altered. No-one I know wants this shit to happen. If people are so fucking precious and fragile - switch the thing off FFS! Stop spoiling it for everyone else. Butchering shit to death like this should be fucking outlawed.

I think Pretty Woman, also watching now is based on Pygmalion/my fair lady

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It’s such an enjoyable spectacle to watch but any kind of critical thinking renders it very problematic indeed.

My DS went through a phase of loving old musicals when he was about 8 or 9. He was horrified by Seven Brides (good for him). I hadn't seen it before either to screen it.

WGACA · 28/12/2024 23:42

Yes also to Dirty Dancjng and Grease!

Hairspray - the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice, negros and coloureds? Just no!

I don’t see the problem with Hairspray, personally. The language is reflective of the period it was set in. Love the 2007 version, still contains those lines and language.

I think I was roughly a similar age when I watched it and thought “ehhh? They’ve done what?!”. It was probably one of my first instances of critical thinking, in fact 😂

The actual musical scenes are beautifully done, the dancing in particular. The plot however, just no.

beetr00 · 28/12/2024 23:44

Last Tango in Paris with Marlon Brando (SA content warning)!!!!

nestingvillage · 28/12/2024 23:45

@Pamosonic sorry, I didn't clock you'd posted about Watership Down too!

I found Indiana Jones really racist when I watched it about ten years ago, just constant casual racism, I was really disappointed as I'd loved it previously.

Yeah, dirty dancing wouldn't be made now since America has come so far with its abortion rights....oh no....wait.....Hmm

90sFilms · 28/12/2024 23:46

I thought hairspray was fine... how do you tell the story without the language?

DS is mixed and we watched it today - had some brilliant talking points and it's a lovely plot - from segregation to integration?

Exactly that! Re-writing history. Pisses me right off! Angry

I think it was an Art Garfunkel song.

Oh! I always thought it was Paul McCartney - obviously my brain was addled by the horror!

YourGladSquid · 28/12/2024 23:47

Saló, probably. Also Pretty Baby (the one with Brooke Shields). Maybe Léon too, although France is still… well, France.

@Diversion Lolita for obvious reasons.

Now that I think of it I honestly think an accurate, non romanticised remake would probably be a good thing. The sexualised Lolita is so ingrained that it would be good to see someone take an honest approach to it.

Itisjustmyopinion · 28/12/2024 23:48

I always thought that Grease had an awful message at the end. Change yourself completely and you will get the man 🙄 Yes he puts on a letterman jacket but that soon goes and he is back to T Bird Danny

I think many mumsnetters would freak out about films like The Goonies these days. Children away for the day on an adventure with no adult supervision would definitely be seen as a no no

user23124 · 28/12/2024 23:48

@Lobsterteapot yes! my first thought

HelenWheels · 28/12/2024 23:48

I think filmmakers might get away with Grease, but I’m surprised it’s still rated as PG, as I think swearing has generally been really clamped down on.
