1000 albums in a year - I want your suggestions!

I'm challenging myself to listen to 1000 new-to-me albums in 2025. I will listen to anything, of any genre (if it's available on Spotify or Apple Music) with the exception of death metal or Bradley Walsh's latest Christmas album😆

I love music but have got stuck in a bit of a rut over the last few years so would like to expand my horizons. What album would you like to recommend to a total stranger?

Andrew bird my finest work yet

I'm a HUGE Andrew Bird fan but rarely find anyone else who is! I've seen him live several times, he's amazing. That Fionn Regan album is a cracker too.

Public Service Broadcasting- The Last Flight.
A beautifully evocative album, available on pretty much all the streaming platforms.

Martibum · 28/12/2024 22:06

Hex Induction Hour by The Fall

moglovesmincepies · 28/12/2024 22:08

I don't think anyone has suggested Ben Howard-Every Kingdom?

MMAMPWGHAP · 28/12/2024 22:09

Bruce’s The River is a double album. Does that count as 1 or 2?

Wet Leg by Wet Leg. Noticed they were on the Gavin & Stacey Finale soundtrack.

Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night

Evanescence- Fallen

Freddie Mercury - Mr Bad Guy

Mike - Life in Cartoon Motion

James Blunt - Back to Bedlam

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

Shania Twain - Come on Over

Joss Stone - Monday Body & Soul

And one I personally have gone back to again and again ever since I bought it with my pocket money at the age of 10 and still love today...

Hex Induction Hour by The Fall

Sadly The Fall bring back too many memories of XH for me to ever want to listen to them again - great fun live though!

Bryter Layter by Nick Drake

You've got some crackers on there @AutoP1lot. Might nick that Mark Lanegan one. Feel free to crib from the suggestions here too 😂

Edited

Thank you! He's my absolute favourite artist. Check out Field Songs, his albums with Isobel Campbell too.

Also Mad Season - Above (deluxe edition). Layne Staley ( Alice in Chains) was their main vocalist and also excellent but Lanegan sings a few songs as well.

Rumours- Fleetwood Mac
Tina Turner - any album, post IKE
Rolling Stones - 1968 ( can't remember name)
Bee Gees - any. The early stuff is poetic, and the disco stuff legendary. Ignore the fake romantic ballads.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - any
Communards - any
Handel - any. But i can share names of key performers.
Akhenaten, Philip Glass, 2021 recording with Anthony Roth Costanza. Fabulous!!

Oh that's sad because MES was a genius. They're the band I saw the most - never the same twice.

My other suggestions are Chapel Perilous by Gnod and F#a#00 by God Speed You! Black Emperor

1000Albums · 28/12/2024 22:21

I'm going to give Chapel Perilous a go. It looks...interesting!

All of Roxy Music’s albums. What a progression they show. In fact I’m listening to all of them tomorrow now I’ve thought of it. Sound track of my life.

1000Albums · 28/12/2024 23:16

@NameChanges123 have you heard case/lang/veirs? It's Laura Veirs with Neko Case and k.d.lang - gorgeous album. I'll give Boards of Canada a whirl from your list - it's one I know of but have never actually got around to playing.

Edited to add: I'll try High Contrast too!

Yes, my mum was a big Roxy fan so they hold good memories for me too.

No, I haven't but I'll definitely try it out. Thanks. Always good to discover new music.

The Board of Canada's song Gyroscope (from the Geogaddi album) was used in the film Sinister.

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 28/12/2024 23:46

Con Todo El Mundo - Khruangbin

I've tried everything but therapy (part one) - Teddy Swims

Voices and Choices - Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra

A11music · 29/12/2024 00:17

I love the idea.
Some random albums that come to mind:
Parquet Courts - Human Performance
Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels
Liars - Drums Not Dead
Sonic Youth - Evol
Swell Maps - Jane from Occupied Europe
Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda
Cindytalk - Labyrinth of the Straight Line
The Gun Club - Miami
Gas - Narkopop
Asva - Presences of Absences
Can - Ege Bamyasi
Coil - Time Machines
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Take Them On, On Your Own
Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Godflesh - Streetcleaner (a little on the heavier side)
Polygon Window - Surfing on Sine Waves

Not necessarily my favourite albums of all time, but what I feel like listening to right now.

I also second Geogaddi by Boards of Canada!
