I fixed snoring!

InfoSecInTheCity · 27/12/2024 12:08

After many years of being a freight train snorer and trying all the strips and sprays I seem to have fixed it accidentally with a new pack of pillows.

Neck had been killing me so while doing the food shop I impulse bought a new pack of pillows

www.argos.co.uk/product/2729884?clickSR=slp:term:pillows:18:28:1

Been using them a couple of weeks now and DH reports I am eerily silent during the night now, no snoring, don't roll round all night like a washing machine spin cycle.

Neck still hurts though so need to find an alternative solution for that. Thinking I might actually have to do exercise instead of just thinking about it.

Has anyone ever used those? They look incredibly uncomfortable to me. I suspect they would stop snoring, but only because I would be unable to sleep.

I use one in combination with nose dilators. The mouthguard takes a bit of getting used to (the one I bought moulded after insertion in hot water) but I don't notice it now and my wife tells me it has worked.

My problem is I have a small mouth. I doubt that thing would even fit in.

My partner uses one, it works a treat. Took a few days to get used to, now he's comfortable sleeping in it. It's a Snoreeze one from Boots.

My dh is the one with sleep apnea. My very unscientific method is how many times a night I am woken up by his snorting (when he comes out of the non-breathing phase).

does he not have a cpap machine?

No, it is not that bad. Not formally diagnosed anyway.

I'm not sure what you mean by "not that bad". According to DH, when we shared a bed (we ended up in separate rooms), I never gasped in my sleep or stopped breathing as far as he could tell, it was the snoring that was the problem. And yet I have sleep apnoea.

I didn't get a diagnosis in the UK, despite begging my GP for a sleep test because DH had said my level of snoring "was not normal" and I was desperate to get to the bottom of it. My GP laughed and said snoring was a "cosmetic" issue and the Primary Care wouldn't pay for the sleep test. He reluctantly agreed, instead, to send me to an ENT specialist, who found I had a deviated septum and operated on it. Didn't stop the snoring though.

I changed GP practices when we moved house and despite seeing them for blood pressure problems for years and telling them I snored heavily, they did nothing about it either, other than prescribing BP meds.

When I subsequently moved to another country and was chatting to the doctor one day they said "that's not normal, I want you to see a cardiologist because that is ringing alarm bells for sleep apnoea." I was sleep tested, found to have severe OSA and I've had a CPAP machine for nearly five years. It is bliss (for both me and DH!). I have annual heart tests and remote monitoring of my sleep through my machine.

I am still angry about the NHS refusal to test me. It brought me and DH to the brink of divorce because of the sleep disturbance and the knock-on effect that had, and goodness' knows what it was actually doing to my health all that time.

Monjaro cured my husbands snoring! Not even the weight loss, it stopped as soon as he took the first dose

That's interesting. I mean its cured mine for sure (I don't wake up with dry throat any more), but I've lost 4st so far so its hard to know which came first, because I sleep in the spare room so there's no-one to tell me!!

blueshoes · 21/01/2025 14:17

@BeringBlue I am glad your condition finally got taken seriously and is addressed.

I am referring to my dh's condition. A CPAP machine is OTT in his case. If he had your level of distress or if his level of snoring and gasping was as bad (it simply isn't), we will get it seen to. We don't even have to rely on the NHS. There is a level of projection in your post which I am uncomfortable with.

BeringBlue · 21/01/2025 18:19

@blueshoes sorry, I meant the situation brought us to the brink, not the NHS. We got through it. But I am still upset that my concerns weren't taken seriously.

I'm glad for your husband that it's not serious - I was having more than 30 apnoeas an hour!

LushLemonTart · 21/01/2025 18:28

@InfoSecInTheCity are you using 2 or 1? I've just ordered them for dh aka freight train

It took a few days to get used to my head being so high up, I used to just have 1 quite flat pillow, but now it feels comfy

Thank you, @BeringBlue 30 apnoeas an hour is definitely not something to be dismissed. It must be frustrating it took so long for the health professionals to be convinced. Flowers

LushLemonTart · 21/01/2025 19:12

Thanks @InfoSecInTheCity . Picking them up tomorrow 😃

As the actress said to the Bishop! Sorry!

HeadFairy · 21/01/2025 20:56

@InfoSecInTheCity do you sleep on your back? I'm a side sleeper and a snorer, but extra pillows puts too much strain on my neck as my head ends up at a 90 degree angle to my body.

Oreyt · 21/01/2025 21:06

I've tried about 20 mouth guards, sprays, strips, £400 thing from the dentist.

I've had 2 sleep tests both are borderline but I don't think recording one night is fair.

I tried the snoring pillow at Argos.
I don't want to waste more money on these but glad they worked for some.

madmumofteens · 21/01/2025 21:07

Got the pillows as recommended DH reports a definite improvement much less snorts and snores lol

I am a side sleeper, I've found by sleeping further up the bed so the pillow is slightly under my shoulder too I get a more comfortable head position. For years I had a really flat pillow and would sleep on my side with my arm folded up under the pillow. It was awkward at first figuring out where to put my arm because obviously couldn't go under 2 thick pillows but I seem to have found a position now,

OP posts:
HeadFairy · 21/01/2025 21:22

@InfoSecInTheCity that's exactly how I sleep now! I will try them and your tip for getting the position right. I'm always exhausted even when I get 8-9 hours sleep, I'm sure the snoring is ruining my sleep!

Ha! This thread has clearly been a hit. Can't find those pillows anywhere close to me now!
