Good for nothing

Just feeling a bit negative. It will pass but I just wanted to say it. Because its not something I can share.

I have litterly no education. I did not go to a mainstream school was told I had moderate learning difficulties. What ever that means.

On mumsnet for example and in real life. I see things written or said. And I have never heard of the word or seen it written. They often mean very basic things yet I don't know them. And because they are not something in my lifeI will forget it within 5 mins.

Then there's that thing I hear . Everyone's good at something/you just need to find your thing.

Nope I'm honestly not good at anything not academic, not artistic. No talents etc .

Tell me something interesting about yourself... I couldn't.

Do you work?

Do you have a family?

People are complex, not everyone is highly interesting.

Doggymummar · 26/12/2024 18:31

Well you wrote that post very well. Showing a good level of English. I went to Uni. But didn't get a degree. My OH is very high up in a bank and has not a single qualification. Being street smart is important.

If you are concerned about not having any qualifications, why don't you look for a course? What interests you? That would be the best starting point

@Itsanewday25 I have a degree , a levels etc.
I've got a professional job , but I'm not really good at anything.
Why is is not easy to do a course ?
Lots of free things to do, local colleges. Online courses , local council adult education.

@Itsanewday25 I bet anything you are good at something.

for example, you may have spelt literally incorrectly (I just had two goes at it before spell check helped me get it right) but you used it in the right context. Many dont.

I'm someone who has never really been able to spell until spell check came around. It never really bothered me, but I was born into a family who encouraged me to be the best I could be. In other words, I was lucky.

you sound, in your posts in this thread as articulate. So you don't know what some words mean. I bet you look them up, because you say you forget the meaning, so you must have known the meaning at some point.

Don't write yourself off. I wasn't the most academically accomplished in my senior leadership team far from it. The talent I had was an ability to see patterns and connections. So I was most able to see what may come next.

I bet you have something similar.

Nothing to be honest. Because there's nothing I'm good at not even basic stuff like drawing, crochet, cross stitch .

To be honest I don't really overly care about the spelling side of it. As long as most people can see what I'm trying to say . And i most probably can. If i look up a meaning of something I forget it within a few mins. If it's a word I can't prounce or spell then I can't look it up.

With spelling in general it's mainly predictive text that does it for me.

I wouldn't write myself of. But lt would just feel nice to have a little something tjat I cam do that feels nice that I can actually do.

You are capable of learning.

Having moderate learning difficulties does not mean you cannot learn. It means it is slightly more difficult to learn. It may take you 20 tries to learn something new, rather than 10 tries. Many people with learning difficulties do just that - they take a bit longer to learn, but they still learn. You can too.

You could learn to

  • do DIY
  • garden
  • look after children
  • make furniture
  • drive a car or van
  • fix a car
  • look after the infirm
  • groom a dog
And a million other things

That's not quite true. If it just took more tries /10/20/50 what ever then i would have done that many years ago. I would know and understand much more than i actually do. It it does not sink in it does not stay there.

Can you give some examples of things you’ve tried?

I don't know how to explain... OK an example. Crochet I can see pictures or watch a video on how to do it. But I can see it but not take it in. There could be step 1,2 3,4 I may do step 1,2 then 3 looks like # instead of a 3 . Then because step 3 looks like # i can't get on to step 4. Then if i can get it to look like steps 1234 . A couple of times it won't stay there i will always go back to step 12#4 . Or it could even be 1###

It get lost between me looking and it sinking in.

I think it depends on your learning style. You may do things better by being shown and then practicing. Others are visual or via hearing.

Are you dyslexic?

You can expand your knowledge by listing to audio books. If you aren’t working and have kids in school look at leisure activities in the day time to give you some idea of what you might like.

I just don’t think you’ve found it!

Everybody learns like this. Well, everyone except a tiny few geniuses, and there's only handful of them in each generation.

When I was about 7 and we were on holiday in France, my Mum sent me to get a large loaf of bread. She taught me "Un grand pain", a large loaf. In French, you say it something like Unh grarhn pahh but it was my first try, so I turfed up at the bakery and asked for "Er Gron Pan". Most of the people stared at me, the baker chuckled, and a kind old gent walked me through it until I could say something like the real French phrase.

I can speak French pretty well now, but I learned it all through repetition and more repetition. Mistakes are normal, they're how we learn.

Don't be put off 🙂 Pick something you'd like to do well, plug away at it and you will find you get better.

You sound as if you’re writing yourself off unnecessarily, OP. I’m clever, and have four degrees, but I can’t distinguish between left and right, and am practically innumerate, and have no number memory — I can’t remember our car reg or DH’s phone number. I couldn’t knit or crochet. I’ve never been able to learn to drive. (Which was fine when I lived in central London, but I no longer do, so I’m embarking on it again, because I now absolutely need to.)

Are you sure you’re not dismissing yourself? Have you worked for a living at any point?

BlueSilverCats · 26/12/2024 23:43

What about "doing" skills? Riding a bike, swimming, cooking (from intuition/heart rather than a recipe) etc?

What would you like to be able to do? Did your school try to prepare you in any shape or form for adult/independent life?

That's the thing though I can't do any of the things you have mentioned.

Not really writing myself of. Just pissed of
Would just be nice to feel I achieved something and had that feel good feeling of achievement

That's trying something once.

Noone learns a new skill the first time they try. They have many failed attempts, then do it right.

Sounds like you give up as soon as you fail. Failing us how we learn. Keep trying until you get it.

You've raised a child. That's a significant amount of learning.

How old is your child/children?

Do you drive?

I can't drive. I don't have any road sence as a driver,

Bring up children does not really count. It does not mean it's a worthless thing. But it does not really count.
