To buy or not to buy present for baby?

Sister's baby born 12th December and I sent £50 in a Welcome to New Baby card. We are seeing my sister tomorrow to exchange Christmas presents. Should I get the baby who is only 2 weeks old a Christmas present? I have bought one for nephew aged 5.

I would, a voucher or a little book or an outfit.

Just a token gift such as a baby toy, book or clothing.

DappledThings · 26/12/2024 15:03

I wouldn't. People bought my DC2 presents when she was 2 days old at Christmas. It was a bit silly.

Yes, but it's for the benefit of the 5 year old. I'd buy a book that the sibling can then read to the baby.

It would be nice if you could, just a book or a teddy or similar, always better to appear over generous than under!

I would, but I would make it a babygro or booties or something.
More to show the older nephew that him and the baby both get Christmas presents rather than the baby needs on at a few weeks.

Yes.

But a token gift.

My DD and a friend's were a few months old at their first Christmas. They got lots of token gifts e.g. teething rings, small cuddy toys. They already had books, clothes and other stuff from when they were born.

No, I'd think that's going overboard.

MaMoosie · 26/12/2024 15:18

I would. With her birthday being so close to Christmas, it’s going to be a whole year before she gets any present again. I’d get her something that should could play with around 6 months.

therewasafishinthepercolator · 26/12/2024 15:19

Yes, if you can just a little one.

ColdHenrietta · 26/12/2024 15:20

Definitely get the baby something. Or your sister will be on MN this weekend wondering why you have so cruelly snubbed your new nibling.

It would be a nice thing to do for the baby’s family. They’ll be able to talk about it with him/her when they’re older.

ShortyShorts · 26/12/2024 15:22

Yes, because birthdays and Christmas are completely separate (or should be).

I'd get something you can never have enough of, like vests/baby growers/bibs or something.

PresentBaby · 26/12/2024 16:34

Thanks all. I got an eight piece set with babygro etc in sales 50% reduced!

Sure. There's plenty of things a very young baby could have!
