The Christmas tree is down!

ILikeMySuitcase · 26/12/2024 12:42

Just taken down the main living room tree, absolute workout getting it back in the box and as usual I found a couple of stars once I'd packed away the decorations.

Trying to get all the trees down today so I can deep clean the house before New Years.

Anyone else just want their space back and taking decorations down today?

I've taken most of the things down but left the tree and the light up garland on the bannister, will get them over the next day or two

Why? It's still Christmas!

Oioisavaloy27 · 26/12/2024 13:47

When did you put it up October?

I quite agree ! in fact even though it has no affect on me whatsoever i always feel a bit angry when people on here do this , how bloody miserable.
I just know i would never get on with someone who does this , it's day 2 of CHRISTMAS !!! we're in the bleak mid winter and surely we all could benefit from a bit of glittery sparkle and light, ba humbug !

Why is it miserable to celebrate differently from you? We celebrate Christmas in the period up to 25 December and not after. We don’t need to keep the tree and lights up to feel happy. Winter isn’t bleak unless you make it. Go out for a long run or walk - you’ll feel better.

Each to their, we have ours up till about the 3rd January. Ours went up on the 7th December. But more to the point 5 trees! You must have a big house x

Scrabbelator · 26/12/2024 13:49

Parker231 · 26/12/2024 13:18

For you it is, for others there are different traditions. For us the main celebration is 6th December for Sinterklaas - that is our tradition.

Yes, Sinterklaas is celebrated on Dec 6th. But that's not Christmas Day. Dec 25th is known as "Eerste Kerstdag". The first day of Christmas. And "Driekoningen" on Jan 6th marks the end of the Christmas period.

Growlybear83 · 26/12/2024 13:49

I'm someone who doesn't love Christmas and we don't have any other family members left in this country so it's very quiet for us. But having made the effort to put a tree and decorations up st the weekend, I at least want to be reasonably traditional and leave the tree up for the 12 days of Christmas. It's always seemed bizarre to put trees up in November - I don't remember that ever happening when I was a child.

Madness. The two turtle doves are only on their way today. You've got ages till the drummers start drumming.

Will be illegal when I become a petty dictator of the world.

Times change. The two turtle doves can fly off back to the 18th Century.

On YouTube, plenty of videos come out on 1st Nov with Christmas decs going up. In December, you can’t go a bloody day without some donut yapping about Christmas related shite.

So therefore, I’d say in 2024 that taking the tree down on Boxing Day is quite normal.

I’ve taken mine down today. I feel that you can’t have it both ways - with all this “build up/preparation” rubbish in November and December and then the 12 days lasting well into January. It actually makes Christmas into some stupid long debacle that takes a quarter of a year. Fuck that shit - Christmas in my house is about a week - from when people stop work/school/uni until Christmas Day. Then it’s DONE and any talk of it and decorations are fucking banished. We are clearing up and clearing out. Our tree is fake and has swerved us nearly 2 decades so that just goes into a wardrobe with no struggling/arsing about. We have one box of decs which goes into a cupboard. All of them are used and nothing is wasted.

I hate what Christmas has become. I don’t really even think I’m a grinch. It’s just become some stupid prolonged debacle of shite.

SerafinasGoose · 26/12/2024 13:51

blackheartsgirl · 26/12/2024 13:12

Each to their own.

i don’t normally take mine down until New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day but I would never judge anyone who does on Boxing Day.

what baffles me more is the shock/horror from other people who can’t grasp that not everyone loves Christmas or gets into the festive spirit.

I bloody hate it, I’ve lost too many significant people in my life for me to love it, I struggle with the whole of Christmas, even putting the tree up is painful and a constant reminder dh and dm are no longer here. My gran died on. Christmas Eve when I was a child so it’s always been tainted anyway.

I'm so sorry. Something about Christmas does seem to amplify loss in the way that other holidays don't.

Christmas was never the same for me after my beloved mum died suddenly at the age of 55. I've now regained a love for the season - although I'll always be a spring person at heart - but it took many, many years (plus a bit of in-law sabotage in the intervening period) for that to happen.

Sending lots of internet-stranger positivity and understanding your way. Christmas can be a tough time Flowers

DaughterOfSqualor · 26/12/2024 13:52

oh sod off!

What a bloody miserable thing to post on Boxing Day, the Second Day of Christmas. Christmas only started on Christmas Eve! Most of us are snuggled up, eating leftover turkey, loads of cheese and watching The Big Sleep on tv. If you want to be an utter party pooper kindly do so in a less smug and public manner.

SouthLondonMum22 · 26/12/2024 13:52

Wow. What a fuss some people are making.

Not everyone is traditional. People have their own preferences.

Abracadabra12345 · 26/12/2024 12:49

I'll vote for you!

Same here.👍

Decorations have only been up for little over a week so far.🎄
Still have presents to open.

Imonlyhereforthebuffet · 26/12/2024 13:52

Parker231 · 26/12/2024 13:44

Perhaps they want to?

obviously 🙄

PrincessSakura · 26/12/2024 13:52

No way, far too early to take them down!
We love having the decorations up, we put them up at the beginning of November and we’ll take them down around the 4th of Jan! You’ve got to have them up when seeing the new year in! 🎄

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 26/12/2024 13:53

Ours comes down on 12th Night - January 6th.

Don’t open the clearly marked thread then Confused

We do our main celebration on 6 December. 25 December isn’t a big event other the end of our Christmas period. We don’t celebrate 6 January as we’re not religious.

Deathraystare · 26/12/2024 13:55

That is a bit previous and sad!. I don't do decorations now but when at home I loved it that decorations were still up for my birthday (Jan 2nd).

You can still enjoy yourself without the clutter of the tree and associated stuff.

StabiloSharpie · 26/12/2024 13:55

Taken it down on boxing day many times, although tend to leave it up longer now. Always down for new year - something nice about the house being all clean and decluttered for New Year.
Apart from this year - where I never actually got round to putting one up (no children in house now). Seemed to enjoy Christmas much more this year, just doing the things that I wanted to do and opting out of the rest.

Mashroom · 26/12/2024 13:57

No I have a nice set of decorations .. pretty and not in your face. Leaving them up until the evening of the first Jan after dinner and do a big clean then

lifeonmars100 · 26/12/2024 13:57

Mine go up around 21st December and come down on 5 January because that is 12th night, around two weeks of it. I am sure if i had the stuff up from mid to late November I would be totally sick of it now. Always do a deep clean of the whole house before putting the decorations up and then another when I take them down. Poleaxed with tiiredness today after all the Christmas prep, followed by the day itself, so am lounging around reading my new book and snacking on tasty leftovers, I love Boxing Day and the feeling that we as far away as possible from Christmas 2025!

MurdoMunro · 26/12/2024 13:57

I think if Christmas in general (shops, TV etc) wasn’t so relentlessly in my face from the start of November I’d be more into keeping the decs up. But by the time Christmas Day comes round I’ve pretty much hit my limit with it all. I’d like to follow the two weeks mid-winter festival but, I don’t know, it’s just all a bit much for me. Sensory overload I suppose.

Our decs will come down in the next few days and I’ll start looking forward to Imbloc/St Brigid’s Day. That’s always an enjoyable feast day for me, will have some niece things going on then.

SandyLanes · 26/12/2024 13:57

Find it so weird when people put their trees up early, only to take them down on the 26th, you know, during Christmas.

Foxingday · 26/12/2024 13:58

Mine will come down on NYE only because we have people over for dinner and we won’t have room otherwise.

Boxing Day is way too early, I think my teens would sob if I took it down today.
