I've never done it myself but those who are line managers how did you learn how to line manage people?

Is there certain training you get or is it a more of a learn on the job?

I just used to wave a ruler and say 'everything done?' 😆

Are you talking about targets or professional issues?

Both I guess.

Where I work there are online courses for people new to line management but if you don't have anything similar, you should be able to find independent resources online.

My tips would be - listen to your team; observe what's going on for a while before making any sweeping changes; maintain a professional distance to avoid getting caught up in drama, gossip and favouritism; keep on top of your admin; learn to delegate; don't overlook the people in your team who quietly get on with it in favour of the needy people and the star performers, because they are your backbone.

Give them space to do things their way, possibly to make mistakes and learn from them. Don't micromanage them. But be ready to step in when necessary.

Respect people. Make sure they know what's needed & trust them to do it and update you
