Watching Celebrity Strictly last night, it was obviously set up for Tayce to win. Why? A group of celebrities of varying degrees of charm and bumble- then they are all soundly beaten by a clearly skilled dancer who's a drag queen.
There have been drag queens on Sewing Bee and Masterchef and House of Games. And loads of other shows I can't remember.
What's the appeal? And why no drag kings? Strictly has been great at featuring same sex couples- why not do more of that?

I would love it if we could discuss this in a way that doesn't get the thread deleted, so please post with care.

I find the "skill and artistry" line puzzling too. Both of my adult children are involved to a greater or lesser degree in the theatre. Pretty sure either of them could pull off a drag look. They do much harder things on the stage!

Fantastic good for them so I bet they appreciate it

theDudesmummy · 26/12/2024 10:48

Oh FFS can the BBC not just leave it alone? I was going to watch this today with my DS who is a big Strictly fan. I'm not going to now. This is just so tedious. Drag and/or trans has to be in everything. And yes, drag is highly misogynistic, how people can claim otherwise is astonishing.

Just because I’d like to educate you drag queens don’t believe they are women at all so get that in your head

Why are they called ‘she’ then?

Drag queens are not trans. Do you understand the difference?

CurlewKate · 26/12/2024 10:50

@Abbyk1980 "Well according to somebody that’s just replied to me they are a bunch of deviants. That’s a sort of people that comment on here"That's what a couple of people who comment on here have said. Most haven't said that at all. I don't think that and it's my thread!

That's a whole different story... I bet these people are terrified of gays, too.

LeticiaMorales · 26/12/2024 10:50

The point is about Tayce and Strictly is that was his talent. Nothing else. He's not a comedian or an actor or a sportsman. That's his skill.

"Skill"? Dressing up and pretending to be a woman??

Obviously, I bow down to the fact that you are blackhowever There are two major differences between drag and blackface. One, "woman" isn't a culture, or even a cultural signifier. Race and skin color are. Second, blackface is considered socially unacceptable because of the American history of minstrel shows, which were created specifically to entertain white people at the expense of black people. They were, quite literally, supposed to be racist, and they very much were.

Drag takes the physical attributes of the female form and grossly exaggerates them for humour. It also does the same - based on a purely male perception of how women think - that they’re always supposedly trying to take each other down and that they’re constantly competing with each other for (ironically) male attention by advertising and overtly displaying their sexuality, that a women is only either sexually predatory or an old hag.

This ‘entertainment and humour’ is also highly discriminatory and at the expense of 50% of the population and is therefore socially unacceptable too.

Big difference is though it comes from a community as in gay men who had to hide themselves Paul O’Grady will tell you about the time where they are performing in clubs and the police were raiding them and trying to beat the fuck out of them so let’s not get ourselves. It’s not the same and it’s not got the same power dynamic.

Do you understand a difference between someone who forces everyone to believe they are females in real life (with all the consequences), and a performer who openly shows he is a man dressed as a woman and a stage act only?

AzurePanda · 26/12/2024 10:53

I have always found Drag deeply unpleasant. It’s only been after the emergence of the GC movement that I’m able to articulate exactly why.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 26/12/2024 10:54

BBC is full of pervs and nonces. They love drag as it is a way of breaking down morals of society and any respect for women. How they laugh at us all!

Here we go again another commentator claiming that drag is the same as being a pervert as in the same as being a child abuser you are absolutely disgusting homophobic and really disgusting

This is not my experience of drag acts I have seen.

Pathetic parody of women that women are supposed to go along with like grinning idiots or we are bigots/no fun/unkind etc. The bbc seem particularly obsessed with the whole culture I suspect someone in high places has skin in the game somewhere along the line.

I've been thinking this for some time. Is it a fetishist? Do they have a son who is into drag? Have they a retirement plan to set up some weird drag cabaret? No idea but someone is really pushing drag and it has turned me off BBC completely.

What enrages me is that we really NEED BBC more than ever to provide impartial news coverage but so many working in it appear to be pushing their own agendas and special interests.

Drag is misogynistic and no different from Black and White Minstrel shows for me. As soon as a drag show / competitor appears I switch channel. The offensive names and fishy jokes completely disgust me.

Why do they need to be "she" at all? Can you actually answer?
Why can't they just be men in dresses without the fake tits, period jokes and female names? If it's all just art and expression, why bring women into it at all?

no it’s not if you are claiming that a whole group of people are perverts and sexual abuse then you are absolutely disgusting. The person who put this post up claimed that people were not saying this. That’s about five people now on this thread.

localnotail · 26/12/2024 10:47

I would also second that I dont see it as an attack on females. Drag acts are usually aiming to look beautiful, attractive, sassy and sexual. They are performers. What's wrong with that? They also never state they are actual women.

They fail in those aspects then 😂

DungareesAndTrombones · 26/12/2024 10:56

I absolutely hate drag and couldn't articulate it for years and have been to see drag queen's with friends. They have always been screeching, bitchy and nasty and I think that is the most offensive thing - their portrayal of women being these awful people.

I saw something on Instagram recently about it being the anniversary of a suffragettes birthday and a drag queen was doing a voice over about her and called her, amongst other things, a "top slut." I just think can you not hear yourself? A top slut for fighting for votes for women. Wow.
