'you look like an old money yummy mummy'...Is this an insult or compliment? Said by my bestie so it was light-hearted but I wasn't sure whether to say thank you or laugh along 🤣 what does this expression mean?

She is lose canon but has a heart of gold. So

Delta41 · 27/12/2024 19:53

Well let’s reverse it:
”you look like a nouveau riche unappealing woman who hasn’t had children”.

Apart from the final part which is neutral, it’s a compliment. Unless of course she is a child hating parvenu. Or a revolutionary. or she might hate tweed.

JollyHollyMe · 27/12/2024 20:16

Yummy Mummy is an insult- it's the same as a Sloane Ranger. Sloane Rangers went on to become yummy mummies. Airhead would be another way to describe a yummy mummy.
It's a very dated term.

Definitely a compliment if she’s 20 years older and your bestie. Old money aesthetic is very in fashion right now too.

Is your daughter called Persephone?

Coolbreezee · 28/12/2024 06:02

Some of these comments are hilarious 🤣 I don't think I've ever worn tweed in my life!

My aesthetic is: more is less, wear clean clothes and wash your face. Hair up (too much of a temptation for DD if down). Never wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or self conscious. Muted patterns and colours rather than statement and bold. No labels. My whole life revolves around DD (but she doesn't have to know that), hate consumerism, so we often find or make our own toys (eg. Wooden spoons, rolls of wrapping paper, counting books, putting things into the waste paper bin and taking them out again....
Yummy - absolutely not. I don't think even an orangutan would fancy me.
Old money - It would be nice to have any money tbh, new or old. Currently bank account is looking pretty sad... Have inherited a grand total of nothing.
I live in the south so I might sound posh to some people?
That is a neutral and honest description of me, in case anyone is remotely interested 🤷

She's saying you don't look cheap, vulgar, trashy, glitzy. I'd think she was saying you look polished too in a classy way.

Old money = scruffy in holes cashmere and inherited tweeds
Yummy mummy = dribble down front and more obsessed with children than anything else

Yummy mummy is an insult
Old money means that you are scruffy

Not sure any of that is how I'd interpret it.

Teenagehorrorbag · 29/12/2024 22:25

Does seem an oxymoron. Old money is Perdita on Bridget Jones or older people with frayed elbows and coloured cords. Yummy Mummy is normally very sporty, groomed and holding down a professional job. (Though maybe some performance parenting going on.......)

If she's older I'd say she meant it as a compliment. You always look stylish even when you are scruffy.......😁?!

Well, if not scruffy, I'm definitely a bit rough round the edges 😅
A lot can be forgiven if your wearing a big old smile, maybe it's that? A bit untidy but happy with a new-found confidence? To be honest I'll take that as a huge compliment. Better that way than made up but miserable (not saying you can't be made up and happy of course - if that's you, what's your secret?! 😜)

If you break down what she said, 'old money' means rich looking, then 'yummy mummy' a trendy well put together Mum, then she probably meant you look good at an older age (not old old, just older). It sounds like she's trying to compliment you I'd say.

TaffetaRustle · 14/01/2025 17:02

I'd take it as a compliment and I would think relaxed, slightly bashed up home from children happily living their life etc.
Mum has a pleasant style but not immaculate and no nail bar nails

Definitely over all the tone I'd say is one of being relaxed. In the home, no freaking out over scratches anywhere or a scuffed skirting board.
Charming home.
