Why are all the birds singing?

Just that, it's really odd?

OP posts:
Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 25/12/2024 23:55

Cause that's how they communicate?

EBearhug · 25/12/2024 23:56

Are they blackbirds? Do you have street lights there?

I bet it's a robin or two, noisy so and sos. Best guess is that they're close to a streetlight, and think it's dawn (actually I wonder if Christmas lights- especially the cool toned ones- could set them off? 🤔)

TabithaHazel · 26/12/2024 00:23

Actually I just called our cat in and there was loud bird song outside so I was wondering the same OP. It’s not light enough for them to think it’s dawn so I’m not sure what is happening tonight!

lezsucks · 26/12/2024 00:30

Walked out of work at half nine tonight and could hear a bird in full song. Wonder if it’s cause it’s suddenly got warm.
Xmas eve I could hear the Covid’s near my house making a racket in the middle of the night. Very odd!

EmeraldRoulette · 26/12/2024 01:02

I've noticed this too but can't track how long it's been going on because I moved home last year and it wasn't happening there but didn't see many birds where I lived before.

I don't think mild weather is a factor as I have noticed on the cold nights too. Here I notice it in particular spots near where I live. It's probably the street lights - but don't they get tired if they think it's daytime 24/7?😂

EmmaSmiff · 26/12/2024 01:43

Some birds, like robins, sing at night. The weather is mild and there are Christmas lights everywhere adding to confusion on when it is night. Noise of people moving around more so than usual, parties etc, can also disturb birds.

Download the Merlin app for free and it will tell you what birds you’re hearing.

It's their Christmas party tonight.

caramelcappucino · 26/12/2024 03:09

Love the username OP! Very poetic 💐

Mississippimud · 26/12/2024 03:19

I noticed the same earlier and thought it strange.

Quweenie · 26/12/2024 04:01

I’m so glad someone else has said this.

I’ve been awake the past few hours and there are so many birds singing!

debauchedsloth · 26/12/2024 04:12

Yeah I can't sleep and it's like a spring morning out there tweet bloody tweet

Petrasings · 26/12/2024 05:11

It’s so warm and we have blossom on the trees here. Spring temperatures and light pollution?
It was colder last year and I heard heard them then too.

mellongoose · 26/12/2024 06:42

We had an actual dawn chorus yesterday. It's really unusual for this time of year.

We are SW and therefore rarely get frost for more than a few hours and hardly ever seem to get snow.

Consequently , there are loads of insects around. No wonder the birds are happy!

jennywrites · 26/12/2024 06:52

Just defending their winter territory. It is quite normal practice for them to do this when food is scarce

WhereAreWeNow · 26/12/2024 07:19

I was wondering this too

ByHeartyCyanMentor · 26/12/2024 07:27

Robins always sing at night and are always around this time of year - why do think we associate them with Christmas?
They are much louder than you imagine as well.

Sinkintotheswamp · 26/12/2024 07:31

It's warm and the silly LED street lighting makes them more alert.

Jennyathemall · 26/12/2024 07:37

Cos they’re happy?!
