Turkey crown 2 hours? More like 1.15!!

Luckily I have a meat thermometer otherwise we'd be eating charred ash in a couple of hours!

Never trust the timings suggested. You really just need to watch it. Our massive turkey was done in 1.5 hours. It’s now doing its job resting until the afternoon, so it will be nice and juicy.

The times are for dry shrivelled turkey imo. Had a turkey one year from Waitrose that said 6 hours, tested after 3.5 and it was very definitely done.

I did Christmas lunch. 1.8kg turkey crown. Sainsburys suggested 2hr 12 cooking time, done in 1hr 40 at 170C. 'Twould have been carbon if cooked as directed AND would not have fed the advertised 9 unless hosting a whole table of competitive undereaters!

Have you checked the actual temperature? My ancient Stoves fan oven (1996), has had a replacement thermostat and I suspect it was 'this new product code will work' is now 20-25° out on 160-200° cooking. Couldn't understand why it was overcooking till I tested each setting.

That's good to know. My crown says 2 hrs 28 it's 2.15 kg. Think I will put it in for 1.5 hours then check.

40 mins per kg plus 20 mins generally works for me. I find the guide times on the packet generally over estimate cook times

We have done our M&S turkey for much less time and gone by the temperature instead. No one needs a cremated turkey.

One of the best things I bought was a digital temperature probe - less than £10 on Amazon. Like you say, having your themometer saved your turkey.

Before having one I always erred on the side of caution and probably tended to cook meats for a little too long. And the instructions on packs are a bit erratic.

Interesting the Sainsbury's ones say 40min per kg plus 60 mins. Wonder if it's a typo but the calculated times are based on this equation. Wonder if we will have a stream of cross people complaining about burnt turkeys this year.

Mine says 20 minutes a kg plus 95 minutes. But 160 fan oven 180 normal.

Bbc food told me 70 mins, then 20 mins per kg. I'm going in to check after the 70 mins now!

Yes, I swear by my meat thermometer. My (quite new) oven does run pretty hot!

DS always says cooking times on meats are there so you can’t sue if you end up with food poisoning and cooked for less than they said, ours said it needed 3 hours done in two,we use a meat thermometer
