I need to sleep so I will leave you with a clue.

It shares part of its name but not its pronunciation with another animal thing and several mineral and plant things. The same part of its name shares its pronunciation but not its spelling with a human name. If you add in the first bit of its name, it would probably be quite an insulting thing to call someone who shares it’s name.

Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 00:36

No, freshwater.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/01/2025 01:34

Trout?

Vignoble · 03/01/2025 06:42

Carp?

Vignoble · 03/01/2025 06:43

Sorry about odd post in early hours. Fever!

Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 10:08

Oh no, hope you are feeling better this morning, @Vignoble.

No, not carp.

Ha - my thoughts were a Slippery Dick but I think they are sea fish.

Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 12:33

😂 not a slippery dick.

I just got an amazing £5 “too good to waste bundle” of lovely things worth over £30 that included some keta salmon fillets, and you have inspired me to make fish balls for supper 😂

rosemole · 03/01/2025 13:54

Is it a one-word name we are looking for? When you say part of its name is that a syllable or a separate word?
Also, do you mean the common (not Latin) name?

Hopefully none of those count as actual questions Grin

Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 15:54

It is a multi word common name.

To elaborate on the clue, there are lots of species of this fish. If you guess the type of fish (eg trout), which is a also word with several meanings (animal, plant and mineral), you should be able to work out which one it is as the first part of the name is descriptive (eg rainbow trout) and it isn’t very flattering.

It is also a human name but uncommon in the UK. You would be more familiar with it if your name were Miep.

Vignoble · 03/01/2025 18:45

I think this is going to prove to be an awesome question. All I have going round my head is 'A Fish Called Wanda' and a 'Hagfish' but based on other clues they are clearly not worth thinking of! Scuttles off.....

rosemole · 03/01/2025 19:08

Catfish?

OP posts:
Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 19:35

No, not a catfish.

I fear it may be somewhat disappointing now after Vignoble’s build up and her suggestion of slippery dick 😂

Do you want another clue?

Vignoble · 03/01/2025 19:49

I would love another clue. I think this one is really hard, especially as I do fish (for family food - three mackerel and I am done) and my main hobby is the natural world. I cannot fathom what the answer may be (pun intended). :)

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/01/2025 20:02

An inedible Ugly Fish with delicious relatives. Freshwater.

Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 20:03

A fish called something other than Wanda has just celebrated it’s 26th birthday.

Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 20:06

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. You might say it’s slightly unflattering description is totally on trend.

Vignoble · 03/01/2025 20:09

Well I hope Wanda has filed her Self-Assessment Tax Return, sharing the same birthday. Only 28 days to go. Better get her 'Skates' on.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/01/2025 20:24

I can't think of many freshwater, inedible fish in the UK. So maybe that's the question; UK?

Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 21:15

No, they aren’t UK native fish, they come from over the pond. There are UK species though and you will find their tastier relative in the supermarket.

The previous clue might be a slight red herring.

The famous 26 year old fish is a mineral imposter.

He isn’t called Wanda.

He probably had a large tax bill in 1999.

Vignoble · 03/01/2025 21:18

Prince?

Vignoble · 03/01/2025 21:23

Ah, is it a type of Suckerfish? Sucker is part or a plant and as far as minerals are concerned if I bought fool’s gold I would be a sucker?

Miepmiep · 03/01/2025 21:34

Not Prince 😂 I won’t count that but singing is on the right track in 2 senses…

Not a sucker fish.

rosemole · 03/01/2025 23:09

Fathead minnow
