What is it about cheese

Why do we love it so much, is there a scientific reason?

Tons of threads about cheese, tons of cheese in the fridge (at the moment), but why is it so great?

I view it as a superfood

I love a bit of mild cheddar, but the others can get in the bin (I'm the world's least adventurous eater though!).

ShiningforLeeBertie · 24/12/2024 14:06

It's a starter, it's a main, and it's a dessert. It's so versatile.

Cheese 👌

Have you thought about therapy?

I dunno but man it's addictive. There must be about 13 different types in my fridge right now.

Salt
That and sugar are the best flavour enhancers!

It doesn't need to be Christmas time for me to have an assortment of cheese in my fridge.

I don't know what it is, but it just makes life better.

TooManyNiblings · 24/12/2024 14:11

DH failed to get the apple wood smoked cheddar I requested, but he's got some hickory smoked instead: OMG I love cheese!!!!!

Onlyvisiting · 24/12/2024 14:11

And fat. But salt AND fat is basically the best thing ever

Well that is true, I just thought that as I typed my previous post. There's ALWAYS a dozen or so types of cheese in my fridge!

I don't know, but I've just been diagnosed as diabetic yesterday so now contemplating a life without (much) cheese. I think it's the foodstuff I'm saddest about.

Scutterbug · 24/12/2024 14:27

Cheese is the best thing about Xmas, all of us adore it! Nothing better than standing in the kitchen with the (now adult) kids all picking at a cheeseboard!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/12/2024 14:39

Mostly the aromas. In part salt, butmost also have some umami (especially Parmesan), mouthfeel of various different sorts. A satisfying combination of protein and fat.
And the teaming with various things from crisp crackers and chutney on. Cheese and walnuts are a good combination if you don't want carbs.

GeeNoWay · 24/12/2024 14:41

I believe it’s something to do with casein? Cheese has been shown to have a similar effect to hard drugs, if I remember correctly.

As someone having their first sober Christmas in a long long while, I fully intend to lean into the cheese board to get my fix this year Xmas Grin

Yes, it is the casein!

dudsville · 24/12/2024 14:49

We've been having toasted sesame bagels with camembert and DH's damson jam. I've been having the rest of the cheeses with wine for "dinner". Our veggie main for Christmas lunch has an entire blue cheese in it. Cannot have enough cheese!

Wendysfriend · 24/12/2024 14:55

Is it an English thing or a Mumsnet thing ? I'm in Ireland and I never heard so much talking about cheese as I read on here. It's really ramped up with Christmas, I just keep picturing people with jammed packed fridges of cheese and taking big bites out of it every few minutes and then the crusty bread 🙄 dear god the crusty bread , what is that... Like stale hard bread ? and then cheese boards and grapes and serving cheese boards before breakfast after breakfast after dinner.

Greengagesummer65 · 24/12/2024 14:59

Genuinely never understood it. To me, it stinks of unwashed feet and has the texture of soap. Apparently am missing out so wish it were otherwise.

fromthevault · 24/12/2024 15:06

Salt and fat, basically.

But also, versatility, different varieties, textures etc. It can be cheap and cheerful (a cheese and pickle sandwich or a cheese toastie?) or smart and luxurious. Crisp crackers with a melting camembert, the snap of celery, a sweet grape. Delicious. Plus, wine!

We used to get a monthly cheese box from cheesegeek. It was amazing and I have no idea why we stopped doing it. My new year's resolution might be to Eat More Cheese.

I don't think you have to give up or cut back on cheese just because you're a diabetic.

It's absolutely not a superfood but is disgusting. Makes me want to vomit even thinking about it 😂 I have to change the channel if an advert comes on for it. Absolutely vile and hiding the thread now as even the thread title is making me want to vomit 🤢

BobbyBiscuits · 24/12/2024 15:14

I could definitely live without it. I don't really enjoy it unless it's a toastie or panini or on a pizza.
My mum could eat a whole block of cheese in a day. Absolutely obsessed. I think it's good for your bones? Maybe I should eat more of it as I have osteoporosis. But really smelly gooey camembert and stuff like that really doesn't appeal.

viques · 24/12/2024 15:16

Cheese is wonderful. Except for blue cheese which is gods little joke on mankind.

I have just counted up how many different cheeses are in my fridge at the moment. It is 6. And a Stilton, but that is a present for someone.
