What is it about cheese

Why do we love it so much, is there a scientific reason?

Tons of threads about cheese, tons of cheese in the fridge (at the moment), but why is it so great?

I view it as a superfood

Nope, not a fan. It's not really what cheese is all.about, imo.

Well that is true, I just thought that as I typed my previous post. There's ALWAYS a dozen or so types of cheese in my fridge!

Me too, I'm never short on cheese. On another thread I saw reference to smoked brie, another one for me to investigate

Well I do like cheese and a cheeseboard and I always lay on a pretty extravagant one at Christmas but I never partake - I’m still too full from my dinner! But we eat out Christmas dinner at about 4/5pm so it’s no surprise really.
I do really enjoy it on Boxing Day.
Parmesan however can fuck off any time of year, so stale and gross 🤢

Is it an English thing or a Mumsnet thing ? I'm in Ireland and I never heard so much talking about cheese as I read on here. It's really ramped up with Christmas, I just keep picturing people with jammed packed fridges of cheese and taking big bites out of it every few minutes and then the crusty bread 🙄 dear god the crusty bread , what is that... Like stale hard bread ? and then cheese boards and grapes and serving cheese boards before breakfast after breakfast after dinner.

No we talk about cheese a lot at work

Yeah, that's pretty much how it is. Except crusty bread in our house means something like a baguette, maybe a loaf of sourdough.

soupfiend · 24/12/2024 15:25

I prefer crackers as it leaves more room for the cheese, also eating fancy cheese isn't a one day a year thing, it's all year

MrsSethGecko · 24/12/2024 15:25

Oh I love cheese. All cheese. Every kind.
I'm having Gorgonzola and apricot jam on crackers for dinner tonight.

I read once that chocolate is so tempting as it's solid food that melts at body temperature, I think that cheese is a bit similar. Its unique flavours are only released once in the mouth. Cheese sauce isn't so satisfying as a nice bit of cheddar on the tongue.

I don't know, but I've just been diagnosed as diabetic yesterday so now contemplating a life without (much) cheese. I think it's the foodstuff I'm saddest about.

Why??? 😢😢 surely you need to watch your sugar, not fat. You want protein (milk products!) 😁 yes the fat is not great but don’t give up cheese!!

Also what a time to be diagnosed!!! They could have just delayed and given you one last Xmas surely 💔

France are famously the cheese nation so perhaps it's come from our Norman ancestry.

Surely that's because cheese sauce is adulterated with non cheese, diluted cheese is not as good as class A cheese

Am a cheese cretin. Sorry. Cheddar, Leicester, wednesleydale, nice. Some smoked cheese, ok. Dutch cheeses, fine. Blue cheese, cheese with crust on cheese that stinks, cheese that's too crombly or too wet, get in the bin.

soupfiend · 24/12/2024 14:08

Have you thought about therapy?

Mild cheddar is disgusting and not really cheese.

Not sure why yet, still learning about how I need to change my diet, but the nurse yesterday definitely mentioned not eating much cheese.

I need to lose a fair bit of weight too, so the cheese may have been more related to that than the diabetes!

I used to restrict the amount of cheese that I ate because it was believed that saturated fat leads to heart disease. Then there was new evidence from scientists that dairy fat despite being saturated does not contribute to heart disease. I think it was about 10 years ago.

There are some people who believe that fat is a much better source of calories than carbohydrate. That can be an extreme position but it does seem dairy fat isn't a problem..

ThePollutedShadesOfPemberley · 24/12/2024 15:45

The entire year I just buy cheddar for Him Indoors but... I have just had a plate of sliced apple, Asdal tomato chutney with stilton, double Gloucester, camembert and some feta and am having a word with myself as to why I only do this at Christmas. It was a riot of amazingness on a plate.

That is such wonderful news to hear on Xmas eve! 🎄🧀

dynamiccactus · 24/12/2024 15:49

I love cheese too, though only the milder hard types.

I could much more easily give up chocolate than cheese.

OP, you should have put a trigger warning on this for vegans Grin

dottydodah · 24/12/2024 16:02

Apparently it hits the "sweet" spot between sweet and savoury.Very hard to resist ! Many dieters find it hard to give up cheese .Love Cheddar ,Edam Boursin/Philly the list goes on .Also online very strong cheddar Lynn Bank .Very tasty indeed!

soupfiend · 24/12/2024 16:02

What's everyone's best cheese then? You can only pick one. I'm currently weighing up manchego vs pecorino. I'll be back with my decision later

Thanks @soupfiend now I can hear the Brie calling my name. Favourite? You expect just the one? Roquefort and Boursault. A nice bit of vintage Cheddar always hits the spot too. I make a mean cheese soufflé too. 😁

Lightswitchup · 24/12/2024 16:23

Like asking folk to pick their favourite child! I’ve just been eating Stilton which was very nice. Can’t really beat a good cheddar though.

hepsitemiz · 24/12/2024 16:32

Yes it’s the casein, it is addictive.

That said, I could take or leave cheese up until my forties when I came to France. Now I’m hooked on Comte Fruité 18 mois for every day and for spécial occasions Brillât Savarin with a topping of griottes cherries…

Crinkle77 · 24/12/2024 16:36

Because it elevates any meal.
