Or should I do both? I don't have great posture and recently have been getting some lower back pain. What would you recommend? Thanks

I find YouTube yoga videos very useful for lower back pain, even though I get on better with "in person" Pilates.

I like YogiInMelbourne and YogaWithKassandra but have tried quite a few.

I had on off lower back issues for ages. Probably either will do you good but I do pilates and I haven't had any back issues since I started, except when I had a few weeks off and tried to lift something heavy

Pilates helped with my back pain but not at first. It seems gentle but it can be very intense on the muscles so I really had to strengthen my core before I felt any improvement in my back pain and stability.

Yoga is good but I was useless at how flowy it all was. I needed more time in each pose and I got bored of trying to figure out how to breathe alongside keeping all elements in place. As a beginner, I found that really stressful and not calming at all. I do occasionally still throw yoga in there but it didn't revolutionise my life but Pilates is an absolute staple.

Having done both I’d say Pilates. If you have back issues though I’d would seek out 121 or very small in person classes to ensure the instructor can see and correct you as poor execution of moves could exacerbate existing problems.
I do Pilates with a instructor who is also a physiotherapist, if you can find such an instructor I’d strongly recommend this.

My physio recommended pilates for lower back pain and it has been brilliant. Go to a proper class and tell the instructor about your issues so they can adjust moves if necessary and check your positioning.

Generally Pilates is recommended for back pain. Yoga tends ro stretch the muscles, Pilates tends to stabilise them.

Pilates has worked brilliantly for me, whereas yoga made my back pain worse. It's really important that your Pilates teacher knows their stuff. I do mat Pilates taught by physiotherapists and it's fab. Not flashy, but everyone in my class has had (or is waiting for) surgery and we all feel we are in safe hands!
