In hospital for Christmas - anyone keep me company?

BiodegradableCutlery · 23/12/2024 13:22

I'm in hospital at the moment (mental health unit) and will be here over Christmas. I won't see family and I'm feeling pretty fed up and lonely right now. Hoping someone may be up for keeping me company with some distracting chit chat?!

I've finally finished the medical box. I wouldn't have started if I had known it would take this long.

I have to hoover and wash the floors next.😫

Sorry, what’s a medical box?

Sorry, what’s a medical box?

A box of medical stuff: plasters, paracetamol, supplements etc

NasiDagang · 24/12/2024 17:17

I've bought a lovely lemon cream cake from Morrisons for half price. My ASD daughter is really chuffed with it, she can be really fussy. Merry Christmas OP and take care of yourself.

ClioMuse · 24/12/2024 17:19

Oooh lemon cake - lovely! And half price 😁

I've found the stollen....

Hskatkat · 24/12/2024 18:00

Podbean is good for podcast
Hopefully everyone is pleasant enough staff wise

username299 · 24/12/2024 18:46

Im watching Kevin Bridges live and looked up langer.

Still haven't done the floors.

BiodegradableCutlery · 24/12/2024 19:05

Thanks for all the messages, they are keeping me busy and distracted!

I'm jealous of all the people cooking a ham - it's one of my favourite parts about Christmas. The hospital food is a bit hit and miss - lots of carbs - but I've not had the biggest appetite anyway. I will report back whether we get a roast tomorrow!

@AdaColeman thank you for the tip about puzzle board I had no idea

@Alwaystired2023 yes please to any podcast recommendations - I'm playing something through my headphones constantly at the moment!

Unfortunately I'm not sure how long I'll be here for which isn't helping how I feel. I've been here a fortnight nearly but nothing will happen this week because of the bank holidays.

I've been rewatching programmes that I have seen loads of times as I find that comforting. I also just watched the series Man on the Inside on Netflix which I found quite silly and watchable if anyone is looking for a recommendation

@Phineyj that sounds amazing, great effort from you and your DD. Do we get a picture?!

Not sure what your vibe is but some faves
Sweet Bobby - capitvating, about a catfish situation
British Scandal - so many (40?) series all about different topics and it's funny and engaging, I'm listening to the Peru Two at the moment but really enjoyed the Canoe Con and the Coughing Major (about the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire cheat)
A Very British Cult - about a cult, might not be great depending on your mind frame x
Scamanda - wild, tale of scamming
Believe in Magic - also wild, also scamming
The Tavistock - about the gender clinic, really enjoyed this
My Dad Wrote A Porno - so so funny

happy Christmas Eve, hope you are okay

BiodegradableCutlery · 24/12/2024 19:34

Thanks for taking the time to suggest those @Alwaystired2023
I think we are on a similar wave length as I've listened to a lot of those already! But that's great as means I'll probably like the ones I haven't, will definitely check out those out, thank you
Funnily enough I just relistened to Believe in Magic last week - and did you see they made Sweet Bobby into a documentary on Netflix recently? I don't think it added much/the podcast was better in my opinion but it still passed some time

Hope you are doing okay @BiodegradableCutlery

How is the wifi in there? I have a puzzle app on my phone called Puzzle Crown and I use it to do a puzzle most evenings, I find it really calming and relaxing. As you play, you gain tokens to exchange for new puzzle packages - there are some lovely scenes and designs. You can choose your level of difficulty too!

It might help to keep you amused for a while - or something to do while you listen to podcasts.

greengreyblue · 24/12/2024 20:18

Sending Christmassy hugs OP. Hope the new year brings you good health. 💐

Alwaystired2023 · 24/12/2024 20:27

Oh love that, I know what you mean when someone suggests things you are already familiar with you can slightly trust their recommendations (I'm awful with accepting recommendation)
Love believe in Magic! Yes I watched Sweet Bobby and it was enjoyable because it's so scandalous, that poor woman

Alwaystired2023 · 24/12/2024 20:28

I'm not very good at the mindless chatty podcasts but of those I can bear Help I Sexted My Boss for some chatter

Th1me · 24/12/2024 20:32

Sending solidarity. Also in a psych hospital with no Christmas leave. Been crocheting lots and watching some tv to pass the hours. The days are just so, so long.
Here if you need a chat.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 24/12/2024 20:33

This is a totally bizarre one, but one evening when I was feeling lonely I got ChatGPT to chat to me, it was actually an enjoyable, silly conversation that passed the time very nicely.

For podcasts I enjoy Ologies by Allie Ward.

@Th1me so sorry to hear. Sending best thoughts to you too.

@Pamelona I could have literally written your post word for word, it's exactly how I feel. Let's say it's not my first rodeo and as an autistic person the noise is actually hell on earth.

Of course.

They don't look that professional, but they tasted amazing! We had to make jam stuff to stick them together with raspberries, sugar, egg and lemon. There were 16 paragraphs of cooking instructions. I think we used every pan in the kitchen. And we had to borrow an electric whisk from the neighbours.

In hospital for Christmas - anyone keep me company?
NickMarlow · 24/12/2024 21:04

Sorry you're not well at the moment @BiodegradableCutlery

I'm waiting for my kids to go to sleep so we can put presents under the tree. Husband is lying on their bedroom floor trying to keep them quiet enough to drop off!

There is a lovely Christmas Day conversation on twitter/X for people on their own which runs all day, used to be hosted by Sarah Millican and still going. Really good to dip in and out of during the day, even if you just want to read a bit of the chat for a distraction. https://x.com/hashtag/JoinIn

Can you find a podcast or audio book to have on in the background? I find this much less effort than watching something and can be soothing if you can find one with the right voice. Nothing too worthy or improving though!

My go to when I can't concentrate is The Wombles on BBC Sounds

Merry Christmas @BiodegradableCutlery. Just wanted to say how proud you should be of taking care of yourself, and that you'll have many cozy Christmases at home in years to come. 🎄

Last Christmas was quite low for me, and this one has a little spark of magic too it. Even with flu & antibiotic prescriptions for everyone in the house. 😂

On special occasions - Christmas / Birthdays / New Year's / milestones - I sometimes like to write letters to my past and future selves. Forgiving myself, reminiscing on things, jotting down hopes for the future. It can be a lovely way to mark the event, and interesting to look back on if you wish.

AdaColeman · 24/12/2024 16:23

Hello there Bio, I'm sorry to hear that you're stuck in hospital over Christmas, and hope you start to feel better very soon.
What's the food like there? My local hospital makes wonderful porridge, the highlight of the day! Sticks to your ribs as my Mother used to say! I wonder if the hospital will put on a Christmas roast tomorrow.

I'm on my own here, so all is calm and quiet. I've some books to read and puzzles to do tomorrow. If you feel up to it, there is a free puzzle board here on Mumsnet, look for the yellow button on the banner at the top of the page.
