Why am I being spammed on Facebook?

For the last week my Facebook feed has been dominated by posts from accounts I have no interest in - so many of them that I see a post from a friend about 1 in 50. These range from car brands to actors to TV and film companies to things like word porn, three minute hacks etc. I click to hide all but cannot keep up with the deluge. Am totally fed up of it.

is there anything I can do wise Mumsnetters?

My FB feed has become one massive ad space, so I've logged out of it and never go there! Sorry, doesn't help but I feel your pain!

It’s because to make money, they have to post advertising and promoted accounts.

This could work, but as so few people are actually posting content, it’s stopped being filler and now is the lions share of the content.

I don’t use Facebook anymore - friends don’t post on it, and my entire feed is adverts, AI generated images, suggested groups etc.

It’s bizarre, no wonder no one is on it.

Yeah, set it to friends updates only.

Menu > feeds > friends

It’s not a permanent fix but if you also spent a few minutes hiding the spam posts (click on the X) the algorithm stops showing you as many.

Agreed. It’s just the fact that it’s ramped up out of control in the last week. So frustrating as usually I like Facebook (I’m over 50) as a way of keeping in touch with friends.

Yes, I’ve been trying to hide/close the spam but it just generates more! I’ll try that setting - thanks!

I see an upsurge in ads if I interact with anything that is a public post, like a public group.

So now I only interact with the rare friend post. I x out any ads that do get through and choose 'irrelevant' if it gives a choice of reason. This keeps ads away for months.

Unfortunately on these more recent posts eg. Nicole Kidman they don’t give you the option to say irrelevant 🥲
