After a shitty 3 months, lost my little sister to pancreatic cancer, she died within 8 weeks of diagnosis, the week of her funeral culminated in the big storm. We had a big power outage for most of the Saturday and travel was almost impossible due to falling trees blocking nearly every local road and inevitable floods.
So today I received an ominous brown envelope. I was going to leave it until after Christmas to open but bit the bullet. To my surprise it was a cheque from the National Grid for several hundred pounds compensating us for the power outage. In all the years we have lived in the house, rural, and after all the power outages we’ve had ( we have overland supply) we’ve never had any compensation. Even after a 48hr power cut over one Easter when the bull in the next field brought down the supply cable by scratching his rear end up the post, we have never received a penny.
It this something new? I glanced at it initially and thought it was for tens of pounds. I banked the cheque quickly in case they changed their minds.
So what have others been pleasantly surprised by this Christmas?
