I am, I know it's a slow process but it's going to get lighter!

The solstice bothers me though 🤔 Yes it'll be getting lighter but we've got two more months of potential freezing weather and plummeting temperatures .... it's not right! 😭

Delatron · 21/12/2024 18:28

Yeah it’s so slow that I don’t get that excited. Mid Feb is when I get excited/happy again. 7.30am
sunrise and 5pm sunset.

Crinkle77 · 21/12/2024 18:30

Yes! Bring on light nights!

ShouldIEvenBother · 21/12/2024 18:38

Yes, I'm delighted.

Had a lovely, sunny walk earlier today - made all the more enjoyable in the knowledge that there will be a tiny bit more light each day now.

@ProbableDoris how delightful! I'm in Sunderland so we have a while to go yet before we see any daffodils, but it's one of my favourite times of the year when they start to bloom 🌼

Xag · 21/12/2024 18:46

I’m more excited that it’s the longest night

I have to say I love long light evenings but I can't be dealing with it being light at 4am in the summer ....
But yes definitely excited that from today the days get longer! I hate it when it gets dark at 4pm, Some days at work it has seemed to be dusk at about lunchtime!

Vicliz24 · 21/12/2024 19:00

Sooooo happy!!! I can't wait for it to be lighter . This miserable darkness makes me so fed up .

Iloveyoubut · 21/12/2024 19:02

I have always been a weird person who would prefer it to be permanently dark at all times. I don’t know why, things just look nicer and seem more peaceful to me so this is probably my dream day!

ExquisiteDecorations · 21/12/2024 19:03

Me, I’d be happy with 18 hours of daylight all year round. You can keep the heat though, long, late spring days with temperatures around 20C are perfection for me.

IDontHateRainbows · 21/12/2024 19:09

Yes. I prefer marking time by the seasons/ solstice/ natural events and always find the countdown to 12 at new year so artificial. Of course, it's obvious that Christmas and nee year hijacked the solstice so I appreciate it when the solstice is honored/ remembered/ noted.

Arraminta · 21/12/2024 19:22

No, absolutely not. I love the deep, dark Midwinter. Forever.

I love the darker mornings and evenings, slightly sad that they're coming to an end. I'll feel like you when the longest day rolls around though 😄

Me too. I get a big sense of relief when we get to the longest day and I know some respite from it being bright all evening is on the way.

I was a bit disappointed on Thursday. It's my day in the office when I leave the house really early. I love getting all the way there in the dark. It feels a bit special but it was such a bright nearly full moon it spoilt it.

Mimilamore · 21/12/2024 19:48

For sure.....

Riapia · 21/12/2024 19:50

Yes, very.

This!

PinkTonic · 21/12/2024 19:56

I’m very happy thinking about the days getting longer a little bit each day. And in a few weeks the snowdrops will be out. I know it will be cold for a while yet, but I hate the dark.

Rowgtfc72 · 21/12/2024 19:58

@Festivefeet I'm with you😁

Babbahabba · 21/12/2024 20:10

Yes! I have a 30 mile commute each way and so much easier/less tiring driving in daylight.

Tupperwarefan · 21/12/2024 21:23

Happy that we are at the solstice because I don’t like these dark mornings either. By February there's a bit of heat in the sun when it comes out. Much better!

Delatron · 21/12/2024 21:58

I never meet anyone in real life who loves getting up in the dark and who loves dark evenings. Only on Mumsnet.

louderthan · 21/12/2024 22:07

Yes I'm so happy. I hate winter (not very keen on Christmas either!) I always feel a huge sense of relief after Christmas and renewal in January. Once January is over, February is a short month (and it's my birthday!) then the clocks turn again end of March. I can't wait.

Icanflyhigh · 21/12/2024 22:48

Yes, so happy we've made it to the shortest day and now we're on the way towards summer again.

Greengagesummer65 · 21/12/2024 22:59

No. Am a winter person and just have to talk myself down by reminding myself there’s still a bit of winter to go. I have some health issues that make Summer very challenging for me but even before that I loved it being cosy dark at 3pm. I’m a rarity, I know!

ChristmasEveNotChristmasSteve · 21/12/2024 23:00

I'm happy that it's the first day of Winter!

The wind is booming in my chimney- It can be quite cozy , but I pity those homeless and those at Sea on nights like this.

Yeah I was feeling a bit overwhelmed earlier & went outside to bring the washing in, I'd forgotten about it & it was dark out.

It was really cold & the wind was really blowing, it really cheered me up (a bit of wind on my face!!) but then I felt really sad at the thought of people on the streets & how bloody miserable it must be trying to keep warm.
