How much do you care about your appearance?

sideofthemountain · 21/12/2024 13:03

I realised for a good 3 years I stopped caring. Piled on the weight, worn the same outfits, hair just brushed and not styled, unkept eyebrows. All linked to depression.

Never let hygiene slip - and always worn clean clothes etc.

But I recently lost some weight and the confidence boost it’s given me is huge and I’ve started taking better care of my appearance.

How much do you care day to day?

I never go out without makeup and I always put electric rollers in my hair for 10 minutes (they straighten my thick curly out of control hair) every day.
I buy quite a lot of clothes, because I like all different fashions.

I look as good as possible when out, however at home I am a slob.
No bra, thick socks, comfy joggers, then pray no one calls round unexpectedly to spoil the myth.

I’m similar. Make a big effort when I go out - make up, nice clothes, styled hair (I like wavers). At home, I’m in PJs, hair in a bun & no makeup

I could have written your post.
I have carried an extra 3.5 stone for years. Depression/life events/ stuff.
Then in August I literally just looked at myself and decided life is passing me by and to pull myself together.
I've lost 2st and 3lbs ish since then with a target of losing the rest before my next birthday. Then I'm going to have a breast reduction.
And in going to spend the rest of my life buying new clothes!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 21/12/2024 14:45

I think because man can grow a beard that is a game changer for masking flaws.

Hmm. As a postmenopausal woman, I reckon I could grow a full beard in about a fortnight. It would disguise the double chin at least...

Seriously though, I am a bit vain and I always make an effort. I've never bothered with foundation as I've always had good skin but I always wear at least mascara. Haircuts every six weeks, regular brow threading and pedicures (I do my own manicures). And dealing with the beard obviously 😄

I wasn't blessed with beauty. I'm average looking but I try to make the best of what I've got.

And well done on the weight loss OP 🙂

StarryPotter · 21/12/2024 14:46

I like to look after myself, mind, body and spirit. Part of that is taking care of my appearance. I make an effort.

I look after my skin, nothing revolutionary. I wear make up most days, I like the routine of it. I like a good lippie.

I’m quite lucky with my hair, it’s pretty easy and doesn’t need styling, I just wash it and leave to dry. My sister trims it every couple of months.

I drink enough water, take a vit D tablet daily.

Walk everywhere (easily do over 10k steps most days)

I eat healthily most days but also have some chocolate most days too. I’m not that restrictive. I’m a size 10/12. Pretty fit.

I’m interested in fashion but not overly bothered about whether what I wear is on trend. I’m nearly 40 and know what suits me and what doesn’t.
I like having nice clothes to wear & I look after them.

I don’t get my hair or nails done - I don’t really have the £££ to do that regularly anyway.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/12/2024 14:47

I care enough to watch my weight and wear make up but I’m really old now so time has taken its toll and I’m not going to scrub up that well anymore.

bryceQ · 21/12/2024 14:47

This sounds very privileged but to be totally honest, I've always been told I'm attractive and I don't feel like I need to do much day to day. I like a natural face look and I'm happy in myself and my skin. I'm treated well by people which is certainly a privilege. My husband tells me I'm beautiful every day. I guess I might struggle as I age if I feel like I've lost my looks but I hope I'll just be comfortable.

JennyTals · 21/12/2024 14:48

I can swing from very dressed up to very scruffy !

so no idea

leia24 · 21/12/2024 14:51

Depends really.
No, I care a lot, I get my hair done every 4 weeks, I wear lash extensions, get facials and botox etc. Some days I really cba though and wear a tracksuit and no makeup. Other days I get properly ready.

lissie123 · 21/12/2024 14:52

I care a lot about my appearance. I wished I didn’t so much. I have a regular mani, haircut, eyelash lift and eyebrow threading. I don’t fret over my weight so much but try and stick to walking everyday and strength training 4 times a week, avoiding alcohol during the week and keeping under the 14 units, and sticking to a reasonable balanced diet. Love clothes and update my wardrobe regularly. Sell unwanted clothes or donate them. Gosh it’s feels exhausting but when I’m at home I slob in leggings jumpers and go bra less and absolutely no makeup.

TinselTarTars · 21/12/2024 14:53

I do care because if I look good on the outside I feel good on the inside. I have a minimal but invested skin regime which means on days I wear no make up my skin I still feel good, I do have botox as a treat since loosing weight and this has made me feel amazing.
I use pininterest for inspo for fashion, lost my way since having the children but I'm often complimented on the school run about my work outfits. I also choose colours which make me feel confident as I have a challenging role which often involves difficult conversations.
I have a pedi every 6 weeks, important to look after my feet as I'm on them all the time. Brows done 4 weekly and hair coloured 6 weekly. I use gradual tan and was in a good work out routine.

Spidey66 · 21/12/2024 14:53

I make sure I'm clean and tidy. I shower daiĺy, wash my hair alternate days, clean clothes generally every couple of days, daily in hot weather (obviously clean undies daily.)

I'm not working atm. When I did, I wore a bit of make up to work. Now I do if I'm going out socially but not if I'm only walking the dog. I get my hair cut every few weeks. I used to get it highlighted but haven't done that for a while, though I plan to in the new year. I'm fairly low maintenance, I reckon.

Crushed23 · 21/12/2024 14:54

An awful lot.

Not hair / make up - scruffy bun and minimal make up most days, but I 100% care about my physique.

I exercise daily and watch what I eat to maintain a UK size 4-6 figure (so a 90s size 8 if you ignore vanity sizing).

I'm petite and don't suit ANY excess weight on me.

Inspiring! I am in the same position.

holjam · 21/12/2024 14:58

A fair bit.
I always wear makeup on days I'm out of the house and make an effort to dress nicely.
I workout very regularly and try to follow a healthy diet 80% of the time.
I buy new clothes every month.
I get my nails done every month and get my hair cut and highlighted every 3/4 months.

NancyJoan · 21/12/2024 14:59

A lot! I love clothes, enjoy shopping, have regular hair and nail appointments. I don’t wear much/any make-up day to day, but am lucky to have decent skin, and strong eyebrows. Enjoy doing ‘proper’ makeup when I feel like it.
I go out to work every day, and enjoy choosing what to wear in the morning.

OChristmasTreeHowLovelyAreYee · 21/12/2024 15:02

In some ways I do, and in other ways I don’t.

I care about my weight, my fitness level and how toned I am. I don’t think it’s vanity. I’m just very active. I’m like Duracell bunny. I run half marathons and love hiking up mountains. I don’t like being overweight as it makes me slower and I can’t do the active things I want to do. I don’t like having flabby bits and I strength train to help my running. I’m also big into nutrition.

I’m obsessive about the condition of my hair and go to great lengths to keep it in tip top condition. I’m obsessive about my skin and have always had a routine and I get my eyebrows done.

In this way, yes I do take care of myself, but it’s not to look good, more to be in good condition, fit and healthy. I probably spend about 7 hours a week working out, and about 2 hours on my skin.

On the other hand, I’m not interested in getting my nails done, but I get pedicures as I don’t want to look at my bashed toenails, I don’t style my hair, I don’t do any tweakments or lash extensions. I’m not into clothes, bags, jewellery, shoes or accessories. I wear a bit of makeup, but at most it’s a 5 min job.

Howmanymoredays · 21/12/2024 15:03

Not at all. Making people feel like they have to care about their hair, make-up, clothes, nails, skin etc... is just a capitalist ploy to get them to part with their cash.
Haven't spent any money on any of the above for years, and it makes no difference at all.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 21/12/2024 15:05

Once every ten years when I have to get a new passport photo taken and realise I'm going to have to hang on to that photo for a decade I care a lot.

Once the photo is taken I go back to considering brushing my hair as job done.

3luckystars · 21/12/2024 15:06

A lot. I think about it all the time. I’m not vain (at all) but I really care about it, and not in a good way. I get moments when it’s like nothing else matters. Like the above poster, it’s not my clothes but my face and body. I understand that most people don’t really care what I look like but the feelings run deep.

I wish I had tons of money to spend on it, but I’d probably go completely overboard and get loads of plastic surgery though, so it’s probably for the best 😁

SallyWD · 21/12/2024 15:12

Sometimes I feel very low maintenance compared to other women. I've never had my nails done, never had a facial, never had my hair coloured wear minimal make up. I get ready for a night out in 15 mins.
However, I do like to look nice. Presentable really. I'm not at all glamorous but I don't want to look like a mess either.

I am low maintenance, mainly because I hate people messing about with me. I do my own nails, would rather go to the dentist than have a massage, and I coloured my own hair for years. I took the opportunity during lockdown to let the natural colour (it's actually white now) to grow through.
I get compliments on my hair and nails, often by women who spend fortunes going to salons regularly.

magicalmrmistoffelees · 21/12/2024 15:24

Interesting question. I don’t really wear make up or get any beauty treatments done, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about my appearance, I just think I look ok without it! I have decent skin, nice hair etc, I wear well cut clothes, I just don’t feel any need to artificially enhance my looks. Maybe I’m just fairly secure in myself.

DidyouNO · 21/12/2024 15:25

I care about my weight a lot because I care about my health long term. I also care about my general, superficial appearance too. I shower every morning, I put jewellery, perfume and make up on most days. I like to feel well presented. I've not, and would not have cosmetic surgery but I do get my hair done (cut and coloured) and used to get my nails done until I turned 50 and started to worry about the UV exposure so I don't any more.

HermioneWeasley · 21/12/2024 15:31

Nearly 50.

at work I am to look clean and professional (but casual). I am one of those people who always looks a bit scruffy - my hair is never quite right, I’ve often got spilled coffee or crumbs or something on me. I iron my clothes but quickly look rumpled.

I usually wear jewellery and some minimal make up - CC cream, powder, mascara and lipstick. I tint my own eyebrows.

at weekends I rarely wear makeup or bother with my hair.

Mustreadabook · 21/12/2024 15:37

Not much. You see for me it doesn't ‘feel nice’ to spend time looking at eyeshadow or choosing clothes. When I wear makeup I just feel self conscious and half the times it makes my eyes itch then i rub the mascara and eye shadow across my face. If clothes restrict movement in anyway I don’t wear them. I’ve mostly had the same hairstyle since I was 5!
