Advice for broken toe needed please

If anyone has ever broken their toe, is there a splint or brace they can recommend? I’ve just been advised to rest it, take painkillers etc but I’m in so much pain

I just taped it to the next toe for support, took anti inflammatories and paracetamol. Are you taking pain killers at all?
All the fracture clinic for DS finger was tape it to the next one for a few weeks too so it seems there’s not a lot they can do for digits!

I did the same as the poster above, taped my broken toe to the one next to it. I did not need any painkiller, only realised it was broken after examining it as it was a bit sore and had a huge bruise on it!

I've broken many a toe and, yes, tape it to its neighbour!

I taped mine up too, my god it was so painful. I didn't wear heels for about 6 months. More painful than my broken leg!

Same advice.

even in the hospital as long as it isn’t the big toe (which is more important and used for balance) they just tape them together.

Use surgical tape and keep elevated when not on it. Ibuprofen (if okay for you to use) and paracetamol for pain/swelling.
Like other injuries if it swells up very significantly or if you see track marks or become feverish like you have an infection then seek help.

I would have suggested you go in if the angle had significantly changed as it might have needed reset, I mentioned that as one of the times I broke mine it went sort of right angled and needed it put back correctly but it sounds like you have had advice already.

iv broken toes several times and it’s painful but they heal.

have you got flat comfortable shoes or trainers that are not too tight as that will help going out.

I broke my toe by slipping on a picnic blanket and sitting down on my own foot. I crushed a decent pair of sunglasses as well. I might have been pissed ....

The toe healed on its own. Painkillers and sympathy.

Get some big socks and shoes to wear for a few weeks, although leave shoes off as much as you can. I used crutches as I didn't feel like I could safely drive for a few weeks so I ended up doing a lot more walking than normal. Painkillers and rest is really all you can do.

I broke two toes when I stumbled barefoot into some metal pipes in my kitchen. I taped them together, took paracetamol and ibuprofen together, and had to keep working - as a nurse! Literally hobbled around the ward!

Whataretalkingabout · 21/12/2024 18:04

Elevate it and ice it constantly! A broken toe is very painful! It will start feeling better when the swelling goes down. 6 weeks to heal completely though.
Happy Christmas anyway! ;)

As others said, tape them together and wear big socks/shoes (I did mine in the summer and wore an old pair of fitflops). Painkillers as necessary.

Nerdlings · 21/12/2024 20:12

Just an update, I called 111 who sent me to urgent care and they took an X-ray.
It’s broken it in 2 places. It’s quite bad so they have strapped it and given me a shoe, and they referred me to the fracture clinic.

@Nerdlings Ouch, hope it gets better soon! Big hug

quirkychick · 21/12/2024 20:59

@Nerdlings ow! I'm glad you've been seen and they've referred you. I did mine in lockdown, sadly.
