Bit sick of recycling piling up in the house

soupfiend · 20/12/2024 14:03

The house is filled with cardboard, theres some in the conservatory, some in the utility room and then a big pile in the hallway on the side table meaning I cant reach the side lamp and everything keeps tumbling and slipping off (because the card isnt dead square) creating a mess

It stresses me out quite honestly

The 'cardboard bag' is full and doesnt get emptied very frequently so I have to hoard this stuff inside and its really annoying.

Then we have two little bins in the kitchen to put other recycling into which get taken out to the big bin from time to time, I just feel like Im living surrounded by rubbish

cut rip it all up

DrIggyFrome · 20/12/2024 18:26

Hose it down and screw it up when wet then put it in the recycling bag. I leave mine outside and the rain helps it all fit.

Sounds horrendous. We have a wheezy bin for paper and card and can leave more out if it won’t all fit.

The normal bin they insist has to be shut but they’ll take any amount of recycling.

I want a wheezy bin

Flossflower · 20/12/2024 18:32

Where do you live? this sounds awful. We have a big box and if we can’t get it all in, we can put cardboard sheets by the side of the bin.

You cant purchase extra collections or extra bags.

And it wouldnt be cost effective to pay a company to remove some card board, its not a skips worth, but it is hassle and faff and time consuming to patrol the local recylcling bins, theres one at the station around 1.5 miles away, then another at a GP surgery 2 miles away and then the tip is 5 miles away. All taking time and a drive out, and if the bins are full we travel back with it

There are sort of man with a van type people who will do small loads. It's not usually terribly expensive.

Greenxtree · 20/12/2024 18:52

I think it's a good sign that more our of our packaging is recyclable rather than single use plastic that goes to landfill. I hardly take out my normal waste bin anymore, but my recycling bin is constantly full! It's astounding how much there is!

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 20/12/2024 14:06

Pick 1 big box and break down all the rest to fit inside it

If we do that they won't take it as it has to be in the bag...they will give extra bags if you want them though! 🤷🏻‍♀️

frozendaisy · 20/12/2024 19:24

Put it on the garden to smother weeds around borders plus it puts carbon back in soil

frozendaisy · 20/12/2024 19:25

Take a bit each time you go out and put in public recycling bins

Put it all in a bag in boot of car so you aren't living with it in the house

I think I said in my OP we have a cardboard bag. The bag is full. Its very small.

We have a recycling bin for cans, glass and pastic, that is fine.

Our council used to provide bags for paper and cardboard, but we also used to have the problem of them blowing away after they were emptied. We now have bins.

Have you checked on the council website under Refuse Collections to see whether they now provide bins?

I would be very surprised if they didn't provide bins these days.

I appreciate this is less helpful than tips already up thread, but if you have a garden, and the sort of soil that you can actually dig without needing dynamite, you can just dig a really big hole and bury it. The worms will eventually turn the cardboard into a soil improver.
It will take less time for the worms to do this (but still months/years rather than days) if you can rip the cardboard (use child labour) and fill messily with some soil mixed with the cardboard.
it does take a while for the cardboard to be digested so you would need to choose a different place to dig if you have an excess of cardboard again soon.
if you are planning a murder and have nosy neighbours, this will also help confuse the police looking for the body dump site, so might be worth it in some niche circumstances.
you need to dig deep though, so you can plant your lettuces or geraniums in the soil well above.

visitbreakfast · 20/12/2024 20:24

Can you not just stop off at a recycling centre or supermarket bins on the way to/from work? It doesn't have to be a massive weekend job

soupfiend · 20/12/2024 23:05

I usually walk to work and I dont pass any bins even if I drive.

The tip opens after I start work in any case and its about a 15-20 min drive so yes its a weekend job to go there and you have to book a slot

I think the point is that fortnightly collections when you have quite a small bags is not enough

Sorry, I obviously know it's a typo, but I am laughing at your wheezy bin. Have you tried rubbing some Vicks on the hinges? 😅

Poor old wheezy bin. Will pop out with some lemsip soon.

soupfiend · 21/12/2024 09:32

I would love a wheezy bin, then I woudnt have the problem

You don't know it's crap. You're basing this on nothing more than your own habits, it's very telling.

Yes exactly this, just today for example, toothpaste, comes in a box, cat food tins comes in a box, puff pastry and short crust pastry, both come in a box, washing capsules bio and non bio, come in a box, dishwasher salt, comes in a box, our water filter comes in a box, cat litter comes in a massive hard paper bag, dates come in cardboard boxes, mince pies - lots of boxes!!

All unnecessary crap apparently!!!

Well exactly. There's too much packaging.
In fact, I am on a no buy for clothes and shoes, which I have mostly stuck to, but I still have so much cardboard.

soupfiend · 21/12/2024 10:50

Clothes dont tend to result in cardboard packaging unless its the piece of card in a folded mens shirt or the card around a set of pants or knickers,,

I dont actually have a problem with card as packaging because its much easier to recycling in society than plastic, which would be the packaging used if card wasnt used. What I have an issue with is the council not picking up regularly enough and the bag being too small which results in me needing to store it in doors. We have crushed it down as much as it will go and condensed it but we're still left with it piling up and spilling over.

Sinkintotheswamp · 21/12/2024 10:55

I think more companies are moving to cardboard packaging. This week I bought Heroes and even Lego mini figures that were all cardboard packaging. Toothbrushes seem to be getting rid of the clear plastic cover too.

TragoCardboardCopper · 21/12/2024 11:00

We have recycling bags too, rather than a wheely bin, but if there's extra cardboard we're told to stack it up and tie it with string and put it out for collection. It doesn't all have to fit in the bag. I'm in Cornwall, if that helps? (I've not heard of other areas with bags so wondering if you are too?)

stealthninjamum · 20/12/2024 14:07

Is this always the case or is it just this time of year? I often put my recycling in the car and if I’m going past the tip take it there. Of course nowadays you need to book an appointment the day before but my point is could you just leave it in the boot temporarily just to tidy the house?

You need to bookmark an appointment for the tip? Must be a regional thing because we don't have to book for either of our local tips. We just turn up and queue if necessary.

You have to book the tip in most areas now. Here, it's been like that since covid. You also are limited on how many appointments you can book in a year!

Ariela · 21/12/2024 11:39

Ask the council for an extra recycling bag or two.
Offer any boxes for people moving house before you break them down.

SnoopysHoose · 21/12/2024 11:50

3 recycling points within 5 miles? that's hardly an arduous chore, drop it off on a weeks. morning, 30mins out your day tops.
Never understand moaning about something that has a simple solution..

blackheartsgirl · 21/12/2024 12:01

Zonder · 20/12/2024 17:25

It wasn't clear what that cardboard bag was. So this is all you're allowed to leave out for the council? We have a big wheelie bin for all our recycling and it's never full so one bag for cardboard doesn't seem much.

We have a cardboard bag for recycling too. It’s totally inadequate. Every council recycling provision is different
