Bit sick of recycling piling up in the house

soupfiend · 20/12/2024 14:03

The house is filled with cardboard, theres some in the conservatory, some in the utility room and then a big pile in the hallway on the side table meaning I cant reach the side lamp and everything keeps tumbling and slipping off (because the card isnt dead square) creating a mess

It stresses me out quite honestly

The 'cardboard bag' is full and doesnt get emptied very frequently so I have to hoard this stuff inside and its really annoying.

Then we have two little bins in the kitchen to put other recycling into which get taken out to the big bin from time to time, I just feel like Im living surrounded by rubbish

You cant purchase extra collections or extra bags.

And it wouldnt be cost effective to pay a company to remove some card board, its not a skips worth, but it is hassle and faff and time consuming to patrol the local recylcling bins, theres one at the station around 1.5 miles away, then another at a GP surgery 2 miles away and then the tip is 5 miles away. All taking time and a drive out, and if the bins are full we travel back with it

Is the cardboard bag from the council?

we are allowed to request as many recycling receptacles as we want. One rubbish bin and all sorts of rules for it, but recycling is unlimited.

We can also improvise for recycling. This time of year, we take a large box and break down the boxes flat and line them up carefully inside. It weighs a ton by the time it is full, but we manage to drag it to the curb on the right day.

It wasn't clear what that cardboard bag was. So this is all you're allowed to leave out for the council? We have a big wheelie bin for all our recycling and it's never full so one bag for cardboard doesn't seem much.

I know, given how much is delivered these days, virtually most things we buy apart from basic shopping comes delivered in card or thick envelopes.

I came here to ask if anyone can suggest an attractive recycling bin to store all the recycling? I have tons of cardboard coming into the house ( don't ask).

FeegleFrenzy · 20/12/2024 17:30

Same and I have a big cardboard wheelie bin but think it’s only emptied every 3 weeks. Think I’m going to start burning cardboard in the stove 🤷‍♀️

soupfiend · 20/12/2024 17:31

And dont get me started on how often the stupid flimsy bag has blown away because the dustmen just chuck it in the drive, and you have to pay to get it replaced and it takes ages for them to send a new one out, despite getting your money up front.

Take it all to a recycling point?

How about the council do what we pay them for instead of citizens having to fill in the gaps in service.

Bryonyberries · 20/12/2024 17:34

Do you have a garden? Some could be stored in shed for putting on the garden to use as a weed suppressant perhaps? It is a pain though with the collections not being frequent enough. I think people would recycle more if the recycle stuff was done weekly.

Zonder · 20/12/2024 17:34

I would be writing to the council to explain how useless this system is. I've never heard of just one little bag for cardboard. We live about a 20 minutes drive from a recycling centre where we can take everything - from cardboard boxes through garden waste to old TVs.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 20/12/2024 14:08

Maybe stop buying crap?

You don't know it's crap. You're basing this on nothing more than your own habits, it's very telling.

Bjorkdidit · 20/12/2024 17:50

Do you never go out in the direction of the tip so you can drop it off on the way to other places?

I find if you go early it's usually not busy so would drop things off at the tip on the way to days out, supermarket or even on the way to work.

Phineyj · 20/12/2024 17:50

Tbh sounds like your council has a stupid system for cardboard, so long run, it's the council you should be trying to influence. Do you have a residents' association or local eco group? We have the latter and they organised a meeting a while back and the council person who came out was actually pretty helpful.

We have a large plastic crate for paper and card and the council don't mind if you have two and you can also bag up any excess in bags (we just use regular plastic see through bin sacks from Amazon).

There are lots of people these days who trade on Vinted etc, and via Freecycle or Freegle, you may be able to identify someone who'd like a job lot of jiffy bags or any cardboard boxes/packs that could be used again.

Why can't you store it outside?

What’s telling is OP writing that she has a feeling she’s surrounded by rubbish.

So, yes, maybe reign it in a bit.

SuperfluousHen · 20/12/2024 17:53

If it won’t fit in the recycling bin put it in the ordinary bin. The council needs to provide suitable bins for this stuff. 🤷🏼‍♀️

LittleBearPad · 20/12/2024 17:55

Sounds horrendous. We have a wheezy bin for paper and card and can leave more out if it won’t all fit.

The normal bin they insist has to be shut but they’ll take any amount of recycling.

Sinkintotheswamp · 20/12/2024 17:57

Aren't you allowed overflow clear plastic recycling bags this time of year? I picked them up from our council reception.

I always have a few stashed away in case our green wheelie bin is full.

glassof · 20/12/2024 17:58

Oh we have a cardboard bag too. It's too small and flimsy. We usually use the biggest box to store smaller bits in once the bag is full.

Our last house (different council) had a cardboard bin, same size as the black bin. So much better. And it didn't blow away/get soggy

HPandthelastwish · 20/12/2024 18:02

That's so rubbish, all our recycling goes in together, glass, plastic and cardboard in a big bin like the black one. And if you have extra they happily take that away too.

WhatIDoIsEnough · 20/12/2024 18:02

I'd put in normal bin .

Sinkintotheswamp · 20/12/2024 18:04

Those bags look rubbish. We have a large wheelie bin for recycling.
I'm sure I heard that all councils are required to up their game with recycling from next autumn. Hopefully you'll get a wheelie bin.

Sorry, I obviously know it's a typo, but I am laughing at your wheezy bin. Have you tried rubbing some Vicks on the hinges? 😅

For those wondering what they are like

Those look huge, even at this time of year it would be big enough as long as boxes are folded down, surely? Unless they're only emptied twice a year or something.

OP, if you really can't fit it all in that sack, and you really can't go to the tip and you really can't go to one of the many recycling points in carparks/supermarkets/community centres, then maybe fold the excess down into a big cardboard box and put it out next to the bag. The bin men will probably take it when they collect your bag.

The blue lid bins are smaller than standard too, the bag comes up to about knee height.

Our bins get emptied every 2 weeks, family of 5. We have extra every time.

Poor thing. Does it need an asthma review?!
