Feeling like something gets stuck under rib when bending over eg in forward fold

It only ever happens in a particular position eg a forward fold in yoga or just now when I was sitting cross legged and folding over to do my bikini line/bits! It began happening after the birth of my second child (which was a section) and it's only ever in that position. It bloody hurts! I have to stretch out straight to make it go away - it feels awful! Can anybody relate?

I have this on RHS. Bent over to pick something off the floor and the pain was so bad I had to hold onto a chair to keep me upright,I thought I was having a (lower down!) heart attack. Probably happens say three times a year, always when bending forward/down. Horrible creepy pain, a bit like a cramp, feels like something moving and digging in deep!

Exactly the same - cat stretch in Pilates and feels like everything is out of place on my left hand side! So glad to know it's not just me

I get this too!! Feels like something pops up underneath my ribs! Always in the right side though

So funny, was sat here pressing on my left ribs as particularly bad at the moment and pressure seems to relieve it. After the sharp pain mine will feel sore for ages, I've even taken ibruphren tonight thinking it was inflammation from an old rib fracture but it is exactly as everyone else has said, like something moved/in the wrong place🤷‍♀️ never been to doctors about it and I'm still alive in my 60s if it's any reassurance to you younger ladies🥰

Just Googled Slipping Rib Syndrome ( which is what this appears to be). Apparently the weakness that causes it can be either congenital (which explains why my DM, myself and my DD all have it and have had it since we were teenagers) or caused by a minor injury or repetitive movement (which probably explains why so many posters are saying they have had it since pregnancy or while doing pilates/yoga).
So glad I can finally give it a name and have found other people who know what I'm talking about.

I have this, and it’s caused by a lipoma growing between two ribs. You could investigate this if you can feel anything.

Nothing! There are 2 doctors in the country that actually know about it, and both are in Paris so in the new year I'm going to contact them and find out how to get a proper diagnosis. I'll also contact the one that suggested it and see what she says. My own GP just said 'see a osteopath' and I did and she didn't have a clue. I then saw another GP who basically said 'live with it'.

From what I gather there are a few pinning/plating options, and a removal of the lowest rib option, but not alot really in terms of realistic treatment without surgery.

Ok thanks. So we don’t have to worry then it seems?

I’m betting it must be - if men got it, it would have a diagnosis, treatment, and probably a support group!

This made me properly laugh!

Another one here 🙋‍♀️ on left side feels like a muscle spasm or cramp, bloody painful, takes my breath away! Lasts for about 10 seconds then eases off.
i thought my was due to damage from radiotherapy for breast cancer but reading this thread seems it’s a lot more common. I’d love to know what it is as mine is quite frequent at the moment (a few times a day) I’ve had a horrendous cough which hasn’t helped!

Kelmarie8 · 24/01/2025 21:26

I have this too, but mines right side. I had my gallbladder removed last march. Its exactly how u guys described. Its like i can feel it pop back then i feel bruised for a day in that area

GentleTealFox · 30/03/2025 23:04

I get the same pain, it’s only started since post childbirth and I’ve only really noticed it 3 years post. It can happen on either side for me and the description is the same as how everyone explains. I bend in a certain way and I get the sharp uncomfortable pain like something is twisting /trapped under my ribs. I straighten up and it subsides. Similar to what others have mentioned I have put on weight in past year , could have some relationship to the issue.
I feel somewhat reassured I’m not the only one.
