How would you play it? How long would you give it so that it boosts your CV? I need the job on my CV and I need the income. Sorry for the brevity but I'm pushed for time. What would you put in place to deal with it?

I've actually got annual leave today 🎉 so I'm planning to enjoy the sunshine in a pub garden (I haven't wanted to go out in a very long time) and try and relax a bit. Then I'll tell work tomorrow as they'll be contacted for references, but won't be able to put my notice in without a start date.

I also need to put some thought into my home office - this will be tricky, but a nice problem for me to have!!

Hi, I’m not trying to derail OP’s thread, just gain info from the current thread - hope OK?!?

From your post OP, I get the impression that you won’t be handing in your notice until after references have been provided and OK’d

Wrt references and notice timing - is this the ‘normal’ or ‘generally acceptable’ order of things?

Can you say to your employer that they will be receiving request for references from a potential new employer, but not already have handed in your notice?

I’m job hunting at the moment and obviously ambivalent about my current employer…

PS @Shabba2025 , I forgot to say congratulations on your new job!!!!

Have a great pub lunch today too!!!

Get the job offer in writing then hand your notice in. Don't wait around. How long have you been there? If you're still in your probationary period you may not have much notice to serve.

Shabba2025 · 20/03/2025 09:40

@Newtt I would normally hand my notice in and then let the new org do the necessary pre employment checks, but at this place I only have 1 week's notice to give, so there is no real rush and I want to get my timings spot on. I also don't think the new org will be ready for me to start in a week.

I've seen some references my current employer has given before so I'm somewhat trepidatious, although through all of this I do actually get on with them and they wouldn't want me to leave, but I'm wondering if they might be a bit spiteful.

What have you seen they’ve put in references before @Shabba2025 ?
Unless they can stand behind a negative reference it’s very dangerous territory. Usually it’s safest to confirm employment dates & last position held.

Shabba2025 · 20/03/2025 10:01

Yes I know! We are a HR department!!!! Basically patronising things about someone not quite being up to the job etc.
