Thread 16 - TalkLair: "Well, I'm not exactly quaking in my stylish-yet-affordable boots, but there's definitely something unnatural going on here."

(Previous thread 15).

Another year over, a new one just begun...

In the TalkLair, the hearth is glowing, the walls festooned with tinsel, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors, the tree is twinkling with fairy lights (and possibly being clambered on by cats). The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch though, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics.

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey Christmas roast beast over there in the corner of the cave…

I think they're still around- the challah is good as are the hamentaschen ( little chocolate croissants).

I'm going to Leeds with a friend soon, so I'll hunt for the bakers. They had a branch in the centre too.

We also used to buy some wonderful granary rolls from Safeway in Headingley, by a Kosher bakery called Zermansky in Leeds. They were ace but bizarrely you bought 5 in a bag.

The Polish bakery Karpaty in Kirkgate market is very good for breads, pastries and cream cakes. Always a big queue.

Thanks Kuc, I'll look out for it.

My friend and I are staying at the Malmaison hotel, in the part of Leeds that when I lived there was the part you never went to, so it's going to be interesting seeing how much it's all changed.

DH & I left in 1987, and I've only been back to the centre once, since, and then only for a couple of hours, (apart from the odd trip to restaurants in the evening with my Dad).

I've seen it and it was great. I honestly didn't notice the long running time. Really strong performances from the lead actors.

Thanks Brit. Yeah that's what everyone says, including my DS. I should get my ass into gear.

FagsMagsandBags · 02/02/2025 22:41

I'm in two minds about the Dylan biopic. It looks good but I'm not sure I'm interested enough. Then again it'll be on a streaming service soon enough so I can watch it then. There are other films I want to see at the cinema and I'm guessing that this one will be fine to watch on a tv screen.

It probably won't win best picture Oscar but it, along with all the other films that aren't Emilia Perez have no got a slightly better chance of winning because the scandals around it are now to huge for anyone to vote for it. The lead has no chance of winning best actress which I'm happy about because I'd like that to go to a woman. It's possible that his Oscar nomination will be rescinded because of rule breaking - slagging off another film and another contender - although frankly I'd happily have them say, all this racist shit and your "poor Hitler" bollocks is too much. Off you pop and don't even think of turning up at the ceremony.

FagsMagsandBags · 02/02/2025 22:42

Re a long film not feeling as long as it is. I felt that with Oppenheimer last year. There was no point where I was looking at the time and wondering when it would end. That's a special sort of talent because long films can be too much. As can shorter films that are so bad that you feel like you've been watching them for five hours and not even half an hour has passed.

artant · 03/02/2025 12:58

I would like to see the Bob Dylan film but can’t remember the last time I actually got to the cinema (I still haven’t seen Oppenheimer or Barbie though I really, really wanted to see those; at this point I need to settle for seeing them on telly).

I saw the actual Bob Dylan on the last day of my A levels. Think I’ve only seen him that one time which is now a very long time ago!

duc748 · 03/02/2025 13:15

Blackbushe in '78! Also a long time ago!

Gonners · 03/02/2025 17:35

I last saw him at the Cap Roig Festival (Catalunya) in 2006. He played piano, which was sited diagonally towards the back of one side of the stage, facing inwards towards the opposite back corner, and he didn't speak or engage with the audience in any way. Fortunately we'd got free tickets from a journalist friend who was there to review it!

Inspired by this thread, I had a look at what was on at our tiny local cinema and Lo! So we went straight out to the 2pm show. Timothée Chalamet was really very good in the role. There were only 8 people there, but we all left singing Like a Rolling Stone.

Also 1978 but Earls Court or Olympia, can’t remember which. A school friend worked in the box office at the Hammersmith Odeon which had an allocation of tickets to sell. She got me great seats.

FagsMagsandBags · 04/02/2025 00:18

I saw him at a gig in Hyde Park in the 90s. Sometime prior to September 1995. He was bloody awful but not as awful as The Who. Also playing were Jools Holland and his big band - v good - Alanis Morrisette, I think, definitely at least one other act and, well, Gary Glitter. The Who were the headline act and we left midway through their set because it had all become far too much.

In case none of you see this. There aren't many regular big groups here, apart from a certain litter tray thread and a weight boot camp, so it's easier to put this here for a wider audience.

Thanks for this, frankly quite outrageous timing after the Sunday night horrific balls-up!

Yes, thanks. I never really think about ads on MN. I have a ad-blocker on my laptop by default, seems to work well on MN without complaint. I'm in (I suspect) the majority who routinely "Accept all" with cookies. I see the ads on my mobe, but I don't do much browsing on that.

If I had the money I would fight you for that house. I’d want to replace that wall of fitted furniture in picture 12 with the shelving Dieter Rams designed for Vitsoe but there’s not much else I’d change (bathrooms possibly as they’re not pictured, presumably for a reason, and maybe the kitchen).

artant · 05/02/2025 12:42

And the pay or consent thing is stupendously badly timed! I tend not to care too much about cookies but when it becomes mandatory to accept them I get a lot more suspicious.

Britinme · 05/02/2025 14:08

Sunken living rooms are a PITA though. Our house had one when we moved in. We've done a lot of renovations and one of those was having the same level all round.

Britinme · 05/02/2025 14:09

I have ads on Mumsnet, as I use it on my iPad a lot, but I basically ignore them. I do have an adblocker on my desktop, but I also don't care too much about cookies.

duc748 · 05/02/2025 14:12

I'd imagine that's the view of most people. I really can't get too precious about cookies; I assume that that ship sailed long ago.

Gonners · 05/02/2025 21:09

You get cookies pretty much every time you log in to anything. I'd be quite surprised if these people never shop online and expect to see what's in their basket, or log in to Mumsnet and expect to be able see which threads they're watching!

duc748 · 05/02/2025 22:45

Have you guys been following the living as a medieval person thread? It's very interesting, and a lot of fun. I've never bothered with those programmes on TV, but hearing from someone who's actually done it is very different.

FagsMagsandBags · 05/02/2025 23:34

I like what they've shown of the inside of that house although probably not the kitchen but as a lottery win buy, there'd be the money to do it up. I'd have to pay for a gardener as well because I wouldn't be able to keep that garden as it is and as it is is utterly gorgeous! My current plan is to win the lottery and do an MA in history of art and curation at Birkbeck. I can't afford to do it without the lottery so I really must win it now so I can.

I haven't seen living as a medieval person so will have a look for it. Thanks for the heads up @duc748 .

I'd noticed the pay or accept cookies etc but hadn't thought much about it. I've seen it in a few places recently. There are some sites where getting rid of ads would be great because they make using the site almost impossible. All the Reach newspaper sites are a total pita with ads and nonsense so I mostly just don't use them. I'm not too bothered about it here. The whole thing with the web is it's free but also not free. When you accept that you get to make your decisions but people can't really think that you'll get it all for nowt, it just depends on how you'd like to "pay". Cookies are a bit of a "I wish I didn't have to but I don't want to have to login to all of the sites I use every time I open up so fuck it."

What happened on this site on Sunday? That's completely passed me by.

In other news I had my first apple in forever this evening. I bought one apple to see how I did with them. I sliced it all up because my teeth are shit and biting into apples is problematic. Anyway, it was a big juicy red apple and I loved every bit of it. Tomorrow I will buy more apples.

Britinme · 06/02/2025 02:56

@FagsMagsandBags some arsehole troll posted pictures of child sexual abuse all over the threads last night and because of the way reporting is set up it took a while to get them taken down. The ability to post pictures is currently suspended but gifs are ok.

FagsMagsandBags · 06/02/2025 03:04

Oh my days that is truly awful! I'm glad now that I did miss it. I hope whoever it was can be tracked down but it's more than likely that they used VPN and will remain anonymous. What a vile thing to do and what a sick and twisted person they are to do that.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 06/02/2025 17:55

Just want a bit of a Grrrr. My main place of work is out in the sticks and it's a really lovely place to be. There's one drawback though, occasionally The Hunt passes by and whilst they aren't allowed on my client's land, I see and hear the riders and their barking pack of slavering brutes running about, blowing horns and shouting. The first time I saw them they were chasing both a deer and a fox, both running for their lives, and that made me so angry. Now, as soon as I hear the barking and the horn blowing my nose and lips curl into a snarl and stay that until they've gone. I loathe those people.
