How long does it take to set up VR headset?

Bought a meta quest 3s for my son’s Christmas present.
When we got the x box for a birthday someone gave me the very wise advice to set aside a good few hours to set it up and download games before giving it to him.

Is that the same for the meta quest? Im a bit clueless and don’t want to spend half of Christmas Day trying to figure it out

How old is your son? Does he have a Facebook account?

Greatpot · 19/12/2024 00:30

He’s 13. No Facebook

I would definitely look at it before Xmas day if you can, my son bought a VR headset a few years back and it sent me to the brink of despair. You need to set up an FB account for him and a lot of the problem revolved around permissions and setting up a linked FB account to the VR account or something like that, as a single parent who is not tech-savvy when it comes to that kind of stuff I found it a nightmare.

"meta quest requires a Facebook account.
Doesn't take hours to set up. Will be straightforward once the Facebook account is in place."

OP, I asked the friend who set up my son's VR headset and he sent the above back.

Greatpot · 19/12/2024 07:25

Ok great thanks. I’ve just set up a meta account for him which seemed fairly straightforward.
Any suggestions of games to download ready? It comes with the Batman one but I think he’d like sports based ones.

Gorilla Tag is fun and free

XenoBitch · 19/12/2024 17:36

You don't need a FB account, just a Meta one.
Have the Meta Horizon app ready on a phone. It is very simple to set up a new headset. It wont take hours at all, and the instructions are on screen and very straight forward. Make sure to do the tutorials, and remember that your son might have to build up to playing for a decent amount of time. VR can make some people feel sick.

I am not into sports, so not in touch with what sporty apps there are... but via store, you can have a proper look at whats about.

Your son will love it (and you will probably want your own headset too).

I'll warn you that last year I downloaded gorilla tag and was checking it worked. My daughter walked in as she'd woken up. She thought I was crazy (the VR wasn't a surprise, it was new games so I wasn't totally screwed).

When I downloaded and practiced beat sabre I almost missed a call from school to say she needed picking up and any x ray 😁

sentfromiphoen · 19/12/2024 17:51

If you let them play Gorilla Tag make sure you have a huge space, otherwise he will be punching walls lol

We have a rug on floor that they know if they come off they may end up punching something hard...mostly works

Beat Saber got my mum addicted. She is now a regular VR user, and she is 67!

Just set up a meta quest account. Unless you've loads of space I would advise getting a mat for playing. My son enjoys it more as he's not worried about punching the wall accidentally 😆

Greatpot · 19/12/2024 18:53

A mat is a good idea thank you!
Got the app now and it looks like there are lots games he’ll enjoy for free while he works out what he likes.
Im looking forward to having a go too!

This is the one we have from Amazon, its 60 quid but it's held up really well and good quality

Any mat will do. Even a bath mat, as long as it is a different texture to the rest of the flooring.. You really don't need to be spending £60 on a mat.

Well not any mat, make sure it's a really good non slip or you'll have a nasty fall. Lesson I learnt the hard way

OP I have a referral code that will give you £46 free credit to spend on games but I'm pretty sure you have to click on it before setting it up for the first time. I'm not sure if it will accept it as youve already set it up but I'll post it just in case, you're welcome to try, as is anyone else who gets one/sees this thread in the future!

Trying out a few free games is a good idea. A helpful tip is that even if you buy a game if you decide you don't like it you can ask for a refund as long as you've spent less than 2 hrs playing it. Good if he changes his mind or buys one by accident.

As well as games you can go on youtube - there is a separate vr section where you can go on safaris, flying over the alps, on a boat sailing past niagra falls etc, it's amazing!

If he already has a PlayStation/x box there is a way you can link them together so he can play his normal games via the quest for a more immersive experience but that is beyond my capabilities! There are videos online explaing it though!

They are probably online with my two playing Gorilla Tag!

Greatpot · 29/12/2024 19:38

Thanks all. Gorilla tag was a great hit and he’s downloaded a couple of free Fortnite style ones so far.
It’s a massive hit so far. He’d be on it all day if allowed. I’m quite grateful the battery doesn’t last that long so he at least gets some enforced breaks!

I knocked a pint of water over my work laptop playing Beat Sabre. Didn't realise til it was too late and the laptop was knackered. Got a good score tho.

How does the quest 3 compare with the 3S? My son has a quest 2 and would like to move to a 3 or 3S for his birthday!

Comparison here - www.meta.com/gb/quest/compare/

I upgraded from a 2 to the 3. The main difference is the lenses. The 3S still has the same lenses as the 2.

If you can afford it, then go for the 3.
