Odd wanky Christmas food

Jellycatspyjamas · 18/12/2024 18:38

I’m finishing off my online food order and think I might have found the oddest Christmas food - sticky toffee cheddar cheese. I can’t even imagine what it tastes like. Sadly I’m too late to order it.

Any other odd food combinations out there that I’ve missed hiding from the shops this year!

If you haven’t had it you can’t comment!

Of course you can. I haven’t had tripe either and know without trying it Id find it vile. You seem to have taken personal offence on behalf of bread sauce 🤣

I love cheese. The only variety I'm not keen on is Brie, unless it's a really good one. But we often have some in anyway, because my DH likes it. He puts up with my Roquefort and Harrogate Blue whiffing out the fridge, so he can have his Brie. My favourite is probably Wensleydale, but I also love Cheshire, Snowdonia cheese (especially Red Storm and Black Bomber) Stilton, and Coverdale (a Yorkshire cheese) Reiver (a Borders variety and any Cheddar if it's good. TBH, if there was a religion devoted to cheese, I'd sign up 😋

I have a friend who abhors cheese of any type or description.
Even Wensleydale!

Bread sauce whoever thought of that was clearly fucking starving with a water leak

I know lots of people love it including my family, but to me it's just like putting porridge on your dinner..yuk

Gettingbysomehow · 19/12/2024 05:01

Bread sauce is the best thing about Xmas.

WaterWall22 · 19/12/2024 05:53

What about this?? https://orders.booths.co.uk/savoury-christmas-trifle-recipe

BlackChunkyBoots · 19/12/2024 06:14

I've never had bread sauce on my Christmas dinner. I'm a southerner, so is it a regional thing, or just because people who have made me dinner despite it so?

M&S do experiment a lot. Whoever designs their Christmas food is a bit of a Willy Wonka.

greengreyblue · 19/12/2024 06:42

Bread sauce is traditional I think. Used to be had with goose too. Probably from times when food was more scarce and bread cheap. My mum was Irish and always made it as did her mum but someone upthread said it’s not served in Ireland. Nigella makes it- I have her Christmas cook book. I only ever make it at Christmas. The smell of the milk infusing is Christmas to me.

greengreyblue · 19/12/2024 06:45

People are making a big deal of the bread in the sauce but as the Wiki page says, it’s just a thickener . The flavours are from the infused milk- bay, peppercorn, mace/nutmeg, clove and onion. Like a supercharged bechamel.

That reminds me of Rachel’s trifle in Friends! 😂

Yes- the pigs in blankets obsession this year. Pigs in blankets on a pizza. I mean yes but NO. It's fat wrapped in fat on a bed of cheese fat. Also, has anyone had that KFC burger with the slab of stuffing on top? The ad reminds me why I'm glad there's no KFC near us! But maybe it's lovely...

I have indeed tried that stuffing stacker burger at KFC. I love stuffing and was intrigued.

Unsurprisingly, it was horrible.

Maybe it’s a regional thing as someone suggested but I and no one I know would eat it as part of a Christmas dinner. I’d never even heard of it until I saw it featured on British cooking programs. Of course that’s not to say Irish people don’t have it but it’s not imo commonly served. Maybe it’s like mushy peas. A common staple of the Irish Christmas dinner (not one I partake in as they’re also vile). I work with a lot of people from the UK who are affronted at the thought and believe they should only be served with chips but the shelves are full of extra stock in the run up to Christmas

On likening it to stuffing. I’ve never had pourable stuffing!

Littlebelina · 19/12/2024 08:32

I like the look of the santa bao buns Blush. Unlikely to get to Waitrose to get some though

OldTinHat · 19/12/2024 08:35

I love banana and tuna toasted sarnies, so I'm probably not the right person to comment on that cheese!

It's a very bad day at the office if your stuffing is pourable! Xmas Grin

Bread sauce is just grim. The texture is a definite no!

Didn’t liken it to stuffing but some are horrified at the use of bread for anything other than sandwiches or toast. Bread is used to thicken gazpacho in Spain also. My bread sauce is not pourable , it’s spooned onto the turkey. DH had neve had it before he met me and now loves it, my adult chn love it, nobody I know in my family doesn’t like it. But then again we do like good food and would find many other people’s Christmas choices( Yorkshire puds and cauliflower cheese ) odd.

Have you tasted it?

greengreyblue · 19/12/2024 16:33

Have you tasted it?

Yes. I don't like the texture. Some people can't eat foods because of the texture, whatever the taste.

And I'm not sure you can label bread sauce as 'good food', then pile judgment on cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire puddings, which are not 'bad' food.

greengreyblue · 19/12/2024 16:38

No I like those things but find them odd as part of a Christmas dinner. I appreciate the delicate flavours of bread sauce, the spices etc, that’s what I mean by good food.

greengreyblue · 19/12/2024 16:39

Please don’t label everything you don’t like as ‘grim’, it’s really childish. So if anyone is ‘piling judgement’ as you say, it’s you!

Ahhh, you think you have a refined palate, I get you. 🙄

Bread sauce is a condiment best avoided and would ruin a meal for me. Unlike cauliflower cheese and yorkshires! 🤷‍♀️

Ummmm, no it's not. And 'everything'? I'm talking about one thing, bread sauce. It is grim, as the texture makes me want to vomit!

I don't think you understand what judgment means in this context.

Bread sauce is bloody lovely

‘Bread sauce is grim’ - judgement. What you meant to say is ‘ I don’t like bread sauce’

You literally said have you never had bread pudding or stuffing. What else was I to infer from that?

If I thought there was an element of snobbishness to your posts the “we like good food” absolutely confirmed it. How you think sloppy bread constitutes good food I’m not quite sure. It’s ok for people to not like the same things. Not two shits do I give what other people have for Christmas dinner. I know what I like and bread sauce won’t be part of it ever.

And having sampled gazpacho before I’d go as far as to say I’d probably prefer bread sauce. Soggy hot bread is probably slightly ahead than soggy cold bread
