Letter re banning school skirts

Has anyone here written a letter to their school regarding banning of school skirts?

Our school have not yet banned school skirts that appear to be disguising this ban by offering different school uniform options. Most of which do not have a skirt option.

I have quite strong feelings against this as I feel that as a school educating young people they should be concentrating on educating their pupils about misogyny and the reasons why they feel school skirt should be banned.

Without wishing to dive into a trans debate, I feel that the trans issue is already eroding women's rights and feel that this is just another step in the wrong direction.

I agree that I am not the best person to word this letter well and wondered whether anyone here has written a similar letter to their school regarding this issue.

If so, would you be kind enough to share all or part of it with me so that I can put together something that I feel makes my point?

It really isn't misogyny. It's about decency. I don't think any of us would like it if boys had their arses hanging out at school. When they do, they are told to cover up immediately!

Might not have been clear I wasn't referring specifically to the potential ban on skirts but rather the attitude from some people that things that are traditionally associated with femininity is considered lesser or tye deviation from the standard.
I'm not saying banning skirts would be misogyny, although I do disagree with it and personally think it would do more harm than good and there should be other solutions.

Startinganew32 · 18/12/2024 14:48

Absolutely fine to ban skirts imo. They aren’t more comfy or practical for women in any way. The opposite in fact.
Also the issue with short skirts was one when I was at school too. I used to hoik mine up really short and I’m ashamed to say it was done for male attention and that I was flattered if I was leered at. I was a moron but it’s the truth and the same is probably true of school girls today.

Isn't the key choice though. You didn't like being forced to wear skirts. Some girls won't like being forced to wear trousers.

I doubt there is any girl who doesn’t wear trousers at all. I bet they wear trousers all the time outside of school. So it’s not being forced to wear something they wouldn’t otherwise wear.

Flowersonthetv · 18/12/2024 14:50

i thinks it’s probably more to do with the broken school system and teachers spending a large amount of time sorting out items that aren’t related to actual teaching.

If making all sexes wearing trousers, so that it causes less issues between students, less cat calling, less policing if someone if wearing a super short skirt and allows teachers to focus more on teaching…..I am all game!

Chrbb · 18/12/2024 14:55

I wish my daughters school would ban skirts.
They have tartan skirts and thw girls roll them up to their earlobes. You can see men perving at them in cars. Men have sexualised school skirts and it's gross.

It's also better for girls to be warmer in winter.

I don't see what trans has to do with anything either.
If all pupils wear trousers then boys can't pretend to be girls by wearing skirts either.

Seems a win all round.

I agree with you.

With short skirts it is also an issue about sitting comfortably and not spending all day sitting in a way to avoid underwear being visible.

Because the entire concept of a uniform is that you don’t have a choice - you wear what you’re told. I’m no fan of school uniforms, but you either have one or you don’t. You don’t get to pick and choose which bits you do and don’t like.

Why not? I worked in Tesco many moons ago when I was a student. They had a uniform. For women, you could pick from a red or blue shirt, knee length skirt, calf length skirt, or trousers and waistcoat if you wished. Everyone in uniform, plenty of individual choice.

School isn't tesco...

It think girls should have a choice as to whether they can wear skirts or trousers.

Why would you think that they shouldn't?

Why is it only girls who should have that choice? Shouldn't boys be able to choose whether to wear a skirt or trousers too?

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 18/12/2024 13:46

I think skirts should be option definitely. Smart trousers do not fit all women's shapes. I would not have been comfortable at all wearing school trousers.

They don’t fit all boys shapes either. Uniform isn’t supposed to make you look good it’s just something you endure, same as everyone else in the school.

Marmiteontoastgirlie · 18/12/2024 15:02

I loved wearing a skirt at school and actually campaigned to have it added to the school uniform, which was just dowdy trousers. But OP it sounds like skirts are still in the uniform? What makes you think they’re phasing them out?

nervousnelly789 · 18/12/2024 15:05

I don’t blame they are getting shorter and shorter, might as well be wearing belts across their asses.

I don’t wear trousers ever, @Startinganew32. When I had to - for work or choir performances - I hated how I looked.

The one time I wore trousers at school (for drama class) I got laughed at and teased.

I occasionally wore trousers as a kid - for riding or playing out in the hill - but my preference was always skirts.

That’s quite unusual though. Even so it’s not for the school to cater to clothing preferences and it’s fine to ban skirts, just as you can’t come into school in a big hoodie either.

But times have changed. When I was a girl more girls wore skirts and dresses. I know dozens of teenage girls through DD and they all live in trousers, apart from at school when they roll their skirts up so high, you can't even see them beneath their blazers.

But you couldn’t pick a green skirt, or a tartan skirt, or a sparkly skirt. This is the point I’m making. You had choices within the parameters of that uniform - you didn’t get to decide what items were part of the uniform.

BunnyLake · 18/12/2024 15:16

I don’t expect this is an issue in independent schools.

ItOnlyTakesTwoMinutes · 18/12/2024 15:18

Dontknowwhattocall13893 · 18/12/2024 14:10

Why are they outdated? Skirts are just a type of clothing.

skirts just for girls, why is it still an option. Uniform should be that, uniform. IMO it will stop the ridiculousness of boys wanting to wear skirts.

I know of no secondary that allows boys to wear shorts, so it would make it more equal if it were just trousers.

worcesterpear · 18/12/2024 15:18

Some girls with sensory issues/ASD are unable to wear trousers (both of mine were at that age, one would wear leggings but no form of formal trousers). So you could raise the inclusivity issue. If schools have a problem with girls wearing short skirts, they could make the skirt a kilt style which is mid calf length.

I was at a private girls school in the 90's. It was an issue.

worcesterpear · 18/12/2024 15:21

A school near me had a sensible uniform before they became an academy: any black trousers, shorts or skirts, white polo shirt and logo jumper. Nearly everyone wore trousers as they could wear ones they found comfortable.

KeepDancing74 · 18/12/2024 15:23

SharpOpalNewt · 18/12/2024 13:50

I would personally ban all school uniforms. Girls roll up the skirts because in their eyes they are horribly old fashioned and frumpy styles that they feel like a granny in.

Teenage girls tend to wear tracky bottoms and jeans out of school and hardly ever wear skirts and dresses other than for parties.

Not saying there wouldn't be dress code problems and everything is solved overnight, but most other countries in the world seem to manage. Why not just let them be comfortable? Plus all this bollocks about not removing blazers or ties when it is 30C outside. No-one should have to wear a tie, but especially not girls who would NEVER wear one as an adult. Even office dress is far more comfortable these days. Girls already have to fit in with what is acceptable for boys in this regard. Stop treating girls as defective boys. I am comfortable at work, why can't they be comfortable at school? How do they expect kids to learn who are hot and uncomfortable?

Couldn't agree more!

That really doesn't answer the why not question though. A uniform can feature several choices, which would be much more inclusive of all shapes and sizes.

I think they should have that choice too.

MintTwirl · 18/12/2024 16:17

i would hated this at school. I don’t like trousers, don’t own any and have been the same since I was really young. Just as some people prefer trousers, others prefer skirts. There should be a choice imo.
