Letter re banning school skirts

Has anyone here written a letter to their school regarding banning of school skirts?

Our school have not yet banned school skirts that appear to be disguising this ban by offering different school uniform options. Most of which do not have a skirt option.

I have quite strong feelings against this as I feel that as a school educating young people they should be concentrating on educating their pupils about misogyny and the reasons why they feel school skirt should be banned.

Without wishing to dive into a trans debate, I feel that the trans issue is already eroding women's rights and feel that this is just another step in the wrong direction.

I agree that I am not the best person to word this letter well and wondered whether anyone here has written a similar letter to their school regarding this issue.

If so, would you be kind enough to share all or part of it with me so that I can put together something that I feel makes my point?

School skirts are hideous imo but they brought in a trousers option in my dds all girls school and only one or two girls in the whole school wear them. I don't understand it, trousers are so much more practical especially in cold weather and for those girls who cycle to school. Personally I would prefer if trousers were the only option but clearly 99% of the school disagree.

But if a girl wants to wear a short skirt then why shouldn't they?

I don't personally want to wear a short skirt and nor does my child.

However, this is probably my point. Why should girls not wear short skirts? We should be educating young people that by wearing a short skirt it does not give somebody right to abuse or harass them .

Surely it depends on how short a.skirt actually is?

I work in a school. I wish they’d ban skirts. I’m fed up of walking up the stairs or corridor behind girls and seeing their arses.

This comes down to the point that does a person's right to wear what they want trump the societal norms and organisational rules to require certain dress standards.

When I go to work there are certain norms on what is and is not appropriate to wear, I couldn't for example turn up in a very short skirt. I see no issue with schools having similar dress codes.

Equally if you support the right for girls to wear micro skirts to school, are you equally happy that this introduces pressures on other girls who might not be so body confident to do the same.

One of the main points of school is to educate young people how to behave in a wider society, allowing short skirts simply teaches selfishness in that their individual rights everyone else's.

At some point decorum and modesty have a place to play. Like it would be unreasonable for anyone to attend a place of work/education in their underwear. At some points you do have bits you should cover up.

No it certainly doesn’t. But learning some respect for yourself and following the rules (whether you like them or not) is a life lesson. They are doing it because despite assuming numerous attempts to enforce the uniform rules and the girls are still wearing their skirts way too short.

Seeing the bottom of a teenagers bum cheeks isn’t okay for school. I see girls walking like that to school all the time. I don’t think we should condone the over sexualisation of teenagers - but hey that might just be me.

In the same way it ain’t in the workplace or that these kids interpret their uniforms later in life to mean wear whatever you want.

I have no issue with removing skirts from the uniform.

It stops all the designer pressure nonsense and it means there is a cohesive look for the school in terms of colours. They could still have crested cardigans and jumpers etc.

I don't see why they do need a uniform, but if they want one, it should have enough options for everyone to dress comfortably.

Yeah I grew up not wearing a uniform and the majority of concerns people have - designer envy etc just didn’t exist. Kids get around this now with designer coats and bags etc.

Kids were comfy but guess what - there were rules - no tube tops, no offensive slogans, no too low or too tight etc.

People say it’s easier but frankly kids don’t wear their uniforms in the evening or weekends so they can manage it then.

My kids wear a uniform and having experienced both I would say no uniforms are the way to go.

I don't see the problem with banning skirts in schools with uniforms. Confused Do they allow students to choose their own trousers, or have a range of cuts? There's no single cut that will work for all women's shapes.

Some girls are not allowed to wear trousers for religious reasons, Orthodox Jewish girls for one and JW's tend to avoid them too although I don't think they are actually banned.

If skirts are being rolled up are a problem make the uniform skirt longer, maybe ankle length.

At my secondary we had several pupils who were Christian Brethren.
The girls all wore long skirts as part of their faith (we had a "any style as long as it's navy" uniform).
Some Muslim girls wore navy shelwar kameez.
That school is now an academy with kilts (urrgh).
Out of curiosity I looked up the current uniform rules.
Pupils can still wear a shelwar kameez (in black now) but I do wonder what the brethren girls do.
Interestingly it doesn't specify a girl has to be Muslim to wear the shelwar kameez - it's just an extra uniform option . If i was a pupil there now (with the personality i have now) I'd choose that option rather than the horrible kilt/shirt/tie option 😂
(We actually had no uniform after the 3rd year - Yr 9 in new money - and one of my friends wore the most beautiful and colourful beaded shelwar kameez's. They were gorgeous)
