Letter re banning school skirts

Has anyone here written a letter to their school regarding banning of school skirts?

Our school have not yet banned school skirts that appear to be disguising this ban by offering different school uniform options. Most of which do not have a skirt option.

I have quite strong feelings against this as I feel that as a school educating young people they should be concentrating on educating their pupils about misogyny and the reasons why they feel school skirt should be banned.

Without wishing to dive into a trans debate, I feel that the trans issue is already eroding women's rights and feel that this is just another step in the wrong direction.

I agree that I am not the best person to word this letter well and wondered whether anyone here has written a similar letter to their school regarding this issue.

If so, would you be kind enough to share all or part of it with me so that I can put together something that I feel makes my point?

I would be glad if they banned school skirts. At my DS's secondary school the skirts were so short that they were barely decent. It was impossible to put one's eyes anywhere, because there were thighs on full view everywhere. It was grim. Fortunately the boys were too young to care, but it must have been hard for the teachers.

Theunamedcat · 19/12/2024 16:10

Our school has just implemented the pleated knee length school skirt policy because of skirt rolling they have been warned roll these and you are all in trousers we all heard the secretary go OFF on a parent about their child and the wearing of the thong which caused that rule to be put in place "YOUR CHILDS RIGHTS TO ROLL HER SKIRT AND WEAR FLOSS KNICKERS DOES NOT TRUMP EVERYONE ELSES RIGHTS TO NOT SEE HER CHEEKS" and "GET UP HERE WITH PROPER CLOTHING IMMEDIATELY" were the basic jist of the conversation apparently the child left the school and this wasn't even the first school they left because of uniform policy

I know I'm old, but my parents would never buy me clothes that I could roll up for school and any hint of it I would have been in trouble at home

I don’t know why you’d think this 😂. The independent school in the town where we live has exactly the same issues. The school campus is spread across the town and as soon as the girls walk out of one building to go to another, the skirts are hoiked up. Alternatively they wander round town in their sports kit, which features incredibly short skorts.

Teenage girls are all the same, however much mummy and daddy are paying for their education.

And always have been - we did this when I was at school and I left in 1973.

DS back in secondary once accidentally had his boxers showing above his trousers.

He got given a wedgie as a result.

Because it seems they have a rare inability to manage to leave a skirt covering their genitalia.

Trousers should be the default in that case or no uniform. Where I bet 99% would fetch up in jeans, leggings or similar.

Well it makes everyone feel uncomfortable to see someone’s bum and often their underwear on full display. So if they are unable to dress in a way that doesn’t cause embarrassment and discomfort to others then they have to wear trousers.

Yes but are they wearing them like that in class?

But if a girl wants to wear a short skirt then why shouldn't they?

I don't personally want to wear a short skirt and nor does my child.

However, this is probably my point. Why should girls not wear short skirts? We should be educating young people that by wearing a short skirt it does not give somebody right to abuse or harass them .

In a perfect world. Whether you like it or not it's nowhere near a perfect world.

The school is going for the line of least resistance so they don't have to deal with behavioural issues.

It's should be entirely reasonable to restrict what anyone wears to stop them showing their buttocks, pants or genitals.

If it were teenage boys sat in class with their dicks or arse cheeks in view would you be defending their right to do it and saying that anyone who objected should just look away?

Exactly. The whole “women should be able to wear whatever they want and if someone reacts to it, it’s their problem”. That’s not how it works. I don’t want to see someone’s underwear - male or female. Also the skirts are not rolled up for comfort- it’s to attract attention, whether from boys, other girls, adults or whatever. There is literally no other reason for it. Speaking as a girl who used to roll up her skirt entirely for attention (from boys, girls and teachers) and can see in hindsight now that my school should have banned skirts full stop. I actually feel bad for male teachers having to work in that environment. Imagine if the boys wore skin-tight trousers that clearly showed the outline of their penis and testicles and hung around their female teachers to see if they looked. Because that’s basically what many girls at my old school did around the male teachers.

JennyTals · 20/12/2024 08:35

I’d rather kids wore polo t shirts and trousers

just got for practical
they don’t need to be in shirts and ties and blazers !!!

But that wouldn't affect a trans person anyway.

Should they be allowed to go to school with no clothes then? Because "girl power"?

There's something known as decency

Edingril · 20/12/2024 09:45

So girls have a choice but boys don't?

Needmorelego · 20/12/2024 10:12

@Edingril if a skirt is on a uniform list then I assume boys could choose to wear one if they wanted to.
Although every summer when you get boys wearing skirts it's usually a protest about not being allowed to wear shorts.
The choices for all should be trousers, skirts, shorts, skorts or culottes.
Just whatever one is chosen should cover the arse and not show underwear.

Telling someone they can't wear a short skirt/thong combination is restricting their clothing choices.

Re your last paragraph- it's not the case that girls are having their clothing restricted because boys aren't able to act appropriately. Both my children are at secondary school where girls are wearing tight skirts that barely cover their knickers. There are no reports of boys behaving inappropriately because of this. The whole issue of girls clothing has arisen simply because girls are not dressing appropriately. People do want want to see a 13 year old girls arse. Simple as that.

Restricting clothing choices is perfectly fine. Standards and decency exist.

Dueanamechange2025 · 21/12/2024 09:08

Ours banned them about 5-6 years ago now and so much nicer not to random girls bums every day at school chuck out time.

There would be regular posts about male teachers not being allowed to make a comment a girls skirt being too short because ‘why were they looking anyway’ etc.

Banning skirts makes sense for so many reasons.

Oh I agree but there are those upthread that think that think it's the right of every girl to let it all hang out and the rest of us should just avert our eyes.
